The Food on Leyte was not handed out due to political revenge. Just like the Gym in Valencia that was started by a previous Mayor but will never be finished as a spite to the old Mayor who started the building. The next Mayor used the money allotted to finish the Gym for his own pet project. The people suffer because of childish spiteful politicians

It is sad, but my daughter was shamed in front of her entire 6th grade class about her weight, by her teacher (at SHS)!! She said to her "you need to reduce" in front of her classmates (my daughter is Fil/Am and her body shape was much different, and more developed, than her filipina classmates were . My daughter was extremely hurt by this from a teacher who should have been there to protect her from such comments. Needless to say, we had a big meeting with her teacher and the principal which resulted in the teacher crying and apologizing, and we also insisted she make a public apology in front of the class, which she did. I am glad that, perhaps, there might be something put into place to protect those who are belittled or taunted based on their looks or appearances.

I agree. Americans should give equal rights to Filipinos. And Filipinos should give equal rights to Americans. This includes green cards, the right to work, real estate ownership, SSI, Medicaid and in three years citizenship. Hell yes. Equal rights for all.

I think because if offence is taken at comments pertaining to political actions, which any country would consider its own business, they may seek some form of retribution against those who make the comments or the whole community (ex-pats in this case). It is a case of putting the head above the parapets, just to get it shot off for no reason. We can all moan about 'out of stock' sir and other relatively-minor service matters as those affect us directly and no one really cares - but get involved in police and/or political matters in a foreign country and you take a risk. As I said before, it will change nothing. Keep a low profile - keep safe.

Welcome to the nanny state. $0 helmet for a $0 head. If a person does not care enough to protect their own head then the government should not be stepping in to hold their hand. Let the retards ride without helmets if they like, focus more on the things that provide safety and protection for other drivers (rearview mirrors, turn signals, proper headlights/break lights, license and registration). We are stopping evolution from taking place and allowing the stupid to thrive.

There are some pretty terrible things happen in the world. Some are acceptable at least by local standards.
I lived in Bahrain for 18 months and stories in the local (government controlled) paper made me shudder.

Family keeps Bangladeshi maid captive and without pay for 17 years. Their excuse "she was a bad cook and the laundry was not clean".
The court decided the family must pay half the wages and repatriate the maid. Wow.

Four young men take young Filipina into dessert and rape her, steal here cell phone.
Defense lawyer says "these are just young men having a good time".
Judgment: probation and return the cell phone.

Indian construction workers refuse to work. They have not been paid for 6 months.
All are arrested for breaking their employment contract and released when they agree to go back to work.
The employer is given a year to catch up on the unpaid wages.

Those little tidbits are not the underbelly of the country. This is mainstream over there.

His ideas are original? I think not. Look to history to find examples.

That's exactly what they will get if he is elected....and that comes straight for the horse's mouth.

The point isn't that I think Duterte is going to do the same stuff that Hitler did, it is to show why people elect crazy dictators. I really don't think the situation in the Philippines is as "desperate" as people (and the media) make it out to be. Yeah, there are things that are screwed up here, but it doesn't take a dictator to sort these problems out. All that needs to happen is for the people to actually demand politicians enforce some of the laws already on the books. The average Filipino continues to vote for same people year after year though....wtf to they think is going to happen? They have they government and society they deserve.

Luckily DI is hosted in Singapore and owned by an LLC in the US. Your comments aren't being posted publicly anywhere in the Philippines, and therefore, break no laws. If anyone had a problem with posts made here and wanted to take actions against a poster would need to find a US law that was broken to get me to release any IP addresses.....and I'm quite sure the US doesn't give a crap about people talking about Philippine politics.

Who ever said "life is cheap in the Philippines", and "money can move mountains", must have been confused.

The linked article proves the locals have great imaginations, or sense of humor, or only care about the tourist spending habits. Nothing to worry about. What did Alfred E Newman always say “What me worry?”

“Tourists in Bohol are encouraged to stay and continue their vacations because security forces are addressing the incursion, Col. Edgard Arevalo, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Public Affairs chief, added.”

“At least 4 government forces and five suspected terrorists were killed in the firefight that started at 5 a.m., Tuesday, in Barangay Napo, military officials said.”

However 700 locals do not live in fear, they just move out to evacuation centers. However it is recommended by the Military for the tourist to just stay and continue their vacations… spend their money… lol. “The 700 people in three separate evacuation centers voluntarily evacuated out of fear, Inabanga Mayor Josephine Socorro Jumamoy said.” Now remember it was just voluntary, not fear of death that the locals decided to voluntary evacuated to save their own lives, but tourist... please please have no fear...just continue on and spend you money here... lol. It is good the Tourist spending is being encouraged and appreciated by the government/military now.

PLEASE READ THIS ENCOURAGING MILITARY ADVISORY AGAIN SO YOU DO NOT EVACUATE FROM YOUR TOURIST AGENDA TO SAVE YOUR LIFE.... LOL... remember only 9 have been killed since the fighting started... lol

“Tourists in Bohol are encouraged to stay and continue their vacations because security forces are addressing the incursion, Col. Edgard Arevalo, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Public Affairs chief, added.”

PS: Although Holy Week is usually quite chaotic and busy, there is still plenty of seats available for tourist wanting to go to Bohol currently.:o o:

Hundreds of Boholanos leave homes due to Abu Sayyaf-AFP clash

Found this in a book over the Philippine history I'm reading. This observation was made in 1634!!
It has been too justly observed by Señor Solórzano , that whatever is established with a view to benefit the Indians (philippino's), universally fails of attaining that end; nor is this to be wondered at, as every regulation brought forward with this avowed intention is always so contrived, as to contribute not to the advantage of the oppressed Indian, but solely to that of the person exercising the chief authority.

I guess the politician(s) who proposed this can afford a car to transport their small children. That is not the case for many thousands of families who have to use their motorbike to transport the whole family. I expect this rule will be ignored outside the larger towns.
