To me, it's a choice if you are attracted by mountains with the cooler climate or the sea and beach. I live in Bacong because I'm attracted by the sea and beach. I would have no problem with living in Valencia, a nice area and many places to visit just outside the door, I go there often, 10 min away. The discussion where most high or low rank expats live is a joke, are we in the kindergarten again

All locations around Negros have traffic problems but would consider Dumaguete to have the worse amount of problems, mainly due to the total lack of any enforcement of traffic regulations. Total inapt attitude of most users especially the trikes and motor bikes whom are willing to kill each other to advance only a few meters in front of each other.

    I don't know.
I have lived in a few places in the Philippines and visited many others, for a couple of years I lived in Mactan Cebu, but we decided to move from there 6 years ago, the reasons being congested traffic giving rise to lots of pollution, there was lots of standing water all around and in many places it would lie so long it would turn green and smelly, this was a higher risk area for Dengue.

Having returned from Scotland to visit my family in Valencia I was to spend a couple of days in Mactan to visit old friends and talk about all the Auld Bar Stewards that had died. My Wee Boy and his Mum come over to meet me at the airport, they had driven over the day before, the first thing my Son said when they arrived was why does it smell funny here, I was to notice this myself there is always a faint whiff of sewage there. An added problem to me there was the price of a Beer in the Bars being P85 and even 90 in some.

So I am now back in Valencia which I think is as good as any other place I have visited in PH and better than any other place I have lived in, apart from the odd killing now and again? generally it has quite a low crime rate and for a Drunken master like myself I can get a Beer at the Red Table for p50, what more could a man want? I must admit the RT is a shitty little place but in an ideal location looking over the Public Park, in the evenings there is lots of young girls roaming around, on weekdays late afternoons is also a good time when all the young Mums pick up their children from the local School there, after a few Beers they all look pretty good to me.

There is so much going on in this Park, there they have a couple of Tennis courts (my Son and his Mum are there playing most nights) there is also a children's playground and a basketball court, at the other end of the park there is quite a number of BBQ stalls this is very cheap eating out for the locals and well supported by them, at this time of year we have the Christmas tree and usually this is quite spectacular being very good this year.

I am always looking for the best Pizza and best Burger and of coarse it's tasters choice but in my honest opinion, this was a fantastic burger that I will without question be back for again. Burger with crispy fries, and 2 Coke on ice, 325 Peso. Foreigner from UK Owner and Cook. Awesome menu loaded with great dishes to choose from, Well worth going out of your way for.

    Taken off of fb.

Apparently, this can happen in the near future.

Initial talks between Dumaguete City Mayor Ipe Remollo and Mr. Hans Sy, owner of SM Malls seem to agree on terms that would replace the old Sibulan airport with a new SM City branch once the new Bacong airport will be complete and functional.

Somehow, Ayala Lands, rumored to be also in contention, may have lost the bid.

Will wait for further details. Stay tuned..

Still, a little bit of tact goes a long way. I get that venting on a forum is commonplace and can help deal with the frustrations of living in a foreign culture but let's try to avoid directing our frustration at other members and being "edgy"/disrespectful. Leave that for the emotionally immature teens.

I guess that is your perception. Personally, I've met a few stand up foreigners and a whole lot of trash foreigners. The distribution seems to be pretty uniform across the island.

Things that can poison a dog:

    Medication
This is the number one cause of pet poisonings, whether a bottle of medication was knocked on the floor and eaten, or a concerned owner trying to help only to overdose. It is crucial to keep all medication away and out of accessibility. Never give your dog human mediation without consulting your vet first. Symptoms may vary, but typically include dilated eyes, vomiting/diarrhea, confusion, and irregular breathing/heartbeat, seizures, coma, and death.

    Pesticides
Sweet smelling rat poisons that are meant to attract rodents also attract your dog. Insecticides can also be easily accessed by your dog nosing around in the garden, and his flea/tick collar can make him sick if he chews on it. It is crucial you keep rat bait in inaccessible places to your dog, and monitor him if he wears a flea/tick collar or is in the garden. Pesticide poisoning symptoms include: Fatigue, pale gums, internal bleeding, nosebleeds, blood in urine/stool, excessive drooling, breathing difficulty, muscle tremors, and death.

    Antifreeze & Other Chemicals
These contain sweet-tasting ethylene glycol, among other dangerous chemicals, highly fatal to pets even in the smallest amounts. Keep all chemicals out of canine reach. Symptoms of ingestion include vomiting/diarrhea, dilated eyes, depression, increased thirst, kidney failure, seizures, irregular heartbeat/breathing, coma, and death.

    Household & Garden Plants
Most plants in large amounts can be potentially toxic. These common flowers are particularly dangerous: amaryllis, aconite, azalea, belladonna, buckeye, foxgloves, hyacinth, hydrangea, ivy, all species of lily, night shade, rhododendron, tulip, and yew. Symptoms of ingestion include: dilated eyes, vomiting/diarrhea, irritation around mouth, swelling of the mouth and throat, excessive drooling, excessive thirst, irregular heartbeat/breathing, muscle tremors, seizures, coma, and death.

    Chocolate
Theobromine, a chemical similar to caffeine, cannot be easily metabolized by animals. Depending on the type of chocolate and your pet's size reveals how much can be deadly. Just one square of baker's chocolate is fatal to a 10 lb dog, and 2 squares are deadly to a 20 lb dog. Signs include vomiting/diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, hyperactivity, muscle tremors, seizures, cardiac arrest, and death.

    Alcohol
Even so much as a drop of beer can cause intoxication. However, alcohol poisoning doesn't come from just alcoholic beverages, but also vanilla extract, and raw bread dough. The fermented yeast of swallowed dough can cause not only alcohol poisoning, but also bloat or intestinal rupture. Symptoms include: disorientation, vomiting/diarrhea, seizure, coma, swollen stomach, seizures, coma, and death.

    Onions & Garlic
Ingested in large amounts can be fatal. A chemical found in these foods, thiosulphate, causes the red blood cells in the blood stream to rupture, resulting in anemia. Baby food containing onion powder has killed puppies. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, vomiting, weakness, irregular heartbeat, and jaundice.

    Xylitol
This artificial sweetener is found in sugarless candy and gum and can be potentially deadly to your dog as his blood sugar rapidly drops. Symptoms include fatigue, staggering, irregular heartbeat/breathing, seizures, coma, and death.

    Grapes and Raisins
Just a handful of either can be fatal to some dogs. Symptoms include vomiting/diarrhea, foamy/bloody urine, irregular heartbeat/breathing, restlessness, kidney failure, and death.

    Avocado
All products of the avocado plant are poisonous to canines, including avocado fruit and guacamole dip made from it. It destroys the heart muscle and other tissues, including the lungs. Signs of poisoning include difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, swollen abdomen, fluid build up around the heart, seizures, coma, and death.

Thanks to the new Valencia Chief of Police giving the short presentation on crime in Valencia it is very much appreciated to know that you are concerned about the well-being of foreigners in Valencia.

I don't appreciate a few fellow foreigners there who tried to take over and constantly interrupt the briefing by giving comments on how the police could make their lives more comfortable. The meeting was about theft, robbery, car-napping, murder and other serious crimes......not karaoke, loud exhaust, giving the definitions for theft/robbery or murder/homicide (save those questions for when you get home and can ask Google but I'm sure if you thought really really hard you could figure that out on your own.....then again, maybe not) or why the Philippines laws are what they are and why they should be changed. Yeah, bad singing and exhausts are an annoyance but hardly considered a serious crime.

So instead of allowing the people with legitimate questions on how these recent thefts/robberies were being committed against foreigners and what steps we could take to secure their homes from criminals you turned it into a b*tch fest about minor inconveniences and sh*t the police have absolutely no control over. I tried to ask some serious questions concerning the topic but the assholes kept forcing the topic back to mufflers, karaoke, questions on why certain things are the way they are in the Philippines (and your answer for that is....it's the god d*mn Philippines , that's why. A police chief in a small municipality can't change that sh*t.) and even sh*t completely unrelated to crime. Instead of focusing on things we could actually achieve (securing our homes and belongings) some wanted to focus on changes that would require reorganizing the Philippines government from the top down and completely changing Philippine culture. If you are really that miserable here maybe you should just p*ss off back to where you came from. (Someone even told the COP that they need to set up a check-point in front of their house every single night to deal with the racing and loud exhausts.....right after the presentation that showed how large Valencia was (24 Barangays) and how few uniformed police officers they have (34 uniformed police + the COP and DCOP). How freakin' ridiculous and self-serving is it that you want at least 1/5th of the police force to sit in front of your house at night to deal with loud exhausts when it was just stated that there was a 20% increase in serious crimes in Valencia? Note: this person used to complain that the road to Valencia was crap.....and now complains that the road is too wide and nice. Sh*t for brains! :dead:)

Now that that little rant is over here is the numbers for the Valencia police station and COP.

    Valencia Police Station
    - 0927-983-2642
    Chief of Police - 0917-301-7926

Wish I had more information to throw out there but some people made that impossible. I can only say there were 27 criminal incidents in October (221 total for the year, up 20%ish from last year's numbers if I remember correctly) but I can't tell you what the breakdown of the crimes committed were or what percentage were against foreigners or if there was more crime in specific Barangays. Those are some of the questions I would have liked to ask but some fat cow kept constantly talking over me...and everyone else. I now know why they rarely ask foreigners for their opinions on how to help.....there are so many here that are selfish a-holes with complete sh*t for brains and won't let anyone else get a word in.

    Second rant over.

I don't think it is something to be all that worried about. I've been the one in the uniform checking the IDs before. Most of them want to be there about as much as you want them to be there and they want things to go as smoothly and quickly as you do.
