I would assume most died on Scooter/ Mopeds/ Motorbikes after recalling their childhoods riding their Bicycle around the block then getting in over their heads, add Alcohol and lapse of IQ and you have the perfect recipe for an "Accident Waiting to Happen."

I believe the article to be generalistic at best for a dash of sensationalism, but seemed interesting if the numbers of the total are correct. I am sure with Americans on par with Aussies the numbers would be similar, would be interesting to see a comparison of Foreigners as a whole as to the numbers quoted regards Deaths abroad.

This is the one I would like to see the numbers for; (hence in part why I posted)
It was followed by the Philippines (126)

I assumed maybe a dozen or would die in each particular country at best, but 100+ blew me away! IF THAT is just for Aussies, then how many Foreigners die each year in EACH SE Asian Country? :o o:

I liked watching "Banged Up Abroad" which showed real life experiences and interviewed those caught and imprisoned, some were stupid and did it for the money, some were mules who were not fully aware, then you have those who are STUPID and think they are getting an all expenses paid Holiday for FREE!

When I have passed through Singapore Airport and Manila Airport the Guards have opened my bags every time to check inside, have to say the Singapore Guards scared me with their reactions holding their Machine Guns at the ready when they opened my Suit Case and saw the BIG REALISTIC looking Spiders I had packed at the last minute to 'scare' asawa and anak here! hehe Maybe I went onto a 'special list' after that lil stunt... :shifty:

So the recent thread on arachnophobia and the sudden appearance of (wo)man-eating spiders in this area was all down to you Brian!

Did the article show the total number of Aussies that have traveled to Thailand (or overseas) during the same time frame? I don't recall that number being in the article. Without the total number of tourists visiting the country the number of people dying is completely meaningless. If Thailand was visited by more Aussie tourists than other countries then it should be no surprise that more people died in Thailand. Is the per 100k rate of death for each statistic even higher than that of Australia?

I couldn't find a chart for Aussie tourists alone but if we just look at the total number of visitors to each country and make an assumption that Aussie tourists somewhat follow these travel trends (although I would guess that countries closer to Australia, such as New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, likely have a slightly higher percentage of Aussie tourists) then it looks like Thailand might be one of the safest countries for Aussies to visit. tourismChart.PNG

...it looks like Thailand is MUCH safer to visit than the Philippines. Shouldn't be any real surprises there; Thai hospitals and health infrastructure is light years ahead of the Philippines. If I had to pick a place to be old (or treated for any illness/injury) it sure as hell wouldn't be the Philippines.

Found a very interesting statistic about american people being killed in foreign countries. Per killed americans per 100000 people Thailand is more dangerous than the Philippines.

One thing to take into account when reading about "American" deaths in the Philippines is the number of dual citizens the country has. It kind of skews the statistics IMO. Most FilAms are familiar with their home country and/or has family there that will be aware of, give warning about, or protect them against certain risks that a "pure" American/foreigner/tourist wouldn't have a clue about.

Note: There are over 3.4 million Filipino-Americans in the US (the largest group of Asian-Americans in the US). The data you provided will count them as "Americans" visiting the Philippines. These Filipino-Americans will have a safety net (family) in the Philippines that those of us actual foreigners/tourists won't have. They also tend to not move back to the Philippines to retire. From what I've seen (anecdotal evidence) the elderly foreigners tend to be targets of violent crime more often as they pose much less of a risk to the criminal. I suspect the countries in the data-set below that have really high rates of "American Travelers" are actually dominated by dual-citizens or second generation Americans with family ties in the country in question.

    From your source:
    american_deaths.png american_deaths1.png

I can't be sure but I believe if you exclude those that grew up and have family in the Philippines the death rate of Americans would be higher than that of Thailand. (It's already pretty close when including Filipino-Americans.) But I could be wrong, perhaps Filipino-Americans are just as likely to be killed in the Philippines as their fellow lighter/darker skinned Americans are....but I really doubt that.

It would be interesting to see what the statistics are when dual-citizens are excluded.

    Brian,

A couple of obvious points can be made regarding "tourist" deaths in the Philippines I think.
    • In the first 6 months of 2017, almost 3.4 million travellers with residence abroad came to the Philippines. This number includes about 75,000 Filipino passport holders (and 130,000 Aussies), but excludes OFW's. The visitor number represents a 12.7% growth compared to the first 6 months of 2016.

    • I would assume that many more foreigners living in the Philippines didn't travel to another country during these 6 months.
    • Make no mistake, even though many of us are resident here and don't consider ourselves as tourists, my visum says otherwise, and I am sure the same goes for many expats living here.
    • Not all countries qualify as a "major retirement destination", but some definitely do, and as retirees go, they are mostly older and may fall ill and die here (that's quite a few dead "tourists" right there).
