The number of daily visitors to Oslob Whale Sharks has been reduced from 800 to 800 at the moment. - klajoo.com - Cebu Vice-Governor Agnes Magpale said the number was agreed in line with the tour operators, boat operators and government agencies that govern tourism activities in the region. Magpale said, "The wellbeing of the environment should not be taken for granted just to maximize economic gains." Visitors will be split among 182 boaters, who will earn less than the current average 3,500 PHP per day. The boaters have already asked for an increase in prices for their boat trips. Visited that place in 2012 when filipinos paid 500 peso and foreigners 1000 peso. Wondering how much it is now?

I think its still the same price but drove past the other day and looked like every car park jammed full of white vans. The ocean was just a sea of small boats.

I know that not everyone will agree with my opinion, but I went to Oslob and then decided not to visit the whale sharks after I read that bringing them inshore specifically for feeding was actually harmful to their long-term survival.

    It's an individual choice.

How do you mean by bringing them inshore? I went and did not see anything to stop them swimming away.

The article I read said they were naturally deep water fish but came into shallow waters to feed on the handouts from the boats (given solely to encourage them inshore) and this made them dependent on that food and they lost their natural way of feeding. It's a bit like the recent thread on feeding the poor and making them dependent so perhaps we need to give the sharks the tools to make their own food.

Nowadays it has become real big business and cannot longer be compared with the situation in 2012 when only a dozen of boat owners were operating from even less tour operators. And yes passing by that particular piece of highway in Oslob is a crime.

    Reduced from 800 to 800?

Anyway, 800 is a lot of visitors. But it seems to be guaranteed income only for existing tour operators. For example, if my nephew wanted to start a whale shark tour, he would now be prevented by law. Correct?

Or perhaps if anyone 'muscled in' on an existing operation they may become the whale shark food.

I pass by many times, never visit inside and will never do it, they don't leet the whale shark keep their natural instincts to search for food, they don't learn their next generation how to act in "normal" life and the instincts to search for food disappear. Oooohhh no problem because I have a pics where I swim beside a whale shark
