My external HD I use as a back up has evidently died.

I guess the good news if any is it's under warranty till 2012 and can be replaced.

The bad news is It's got thousands of pictures on it from all over SEA.

Does any one know where I might be able to get it backed up??

I'm sure there's some kind of technology that can do it

If it is a physical disk problem then i doubt any shop here in Dumaguete can recover the data. However if it isn't then there is a chance the data can be retrieved. I could check it for you at no charge.

We've used a company up in Queensland to recover data lost in similar circumstances. They are extremely good - get heaps of business from government and private companies - and not cheap. Plus courier in both directions. Likely very little, if any, change out of $500. But they've never disappointed us. Depends how precious the photos are to you....and your risk tolerance for getting it done locally.

If it is only a backup drive, I wouldn't bother much. get a 1 or 1.5 TB for about 5-6K and copy your files from your PC there, to make this your new backup.

Then you can replace your broken one using the warranty or it to a local computer tech and see what they can do with it.

The problem is the computer doesn't recognize the drive. so cant copy the files.
which is what Id like to do.

clear copy, when I get to town, I'll look u up. thanks

as for cost, the pictures are worth a lot to me. and I would pay up to 500 to get them back.

... sorry for miss-understanding, but you were talking about your backup-drive is broken.

If you store your original files on it, it is not a backup...

True, my bad, for a long time I had them on both my PC and the back up but I was filling up the HD on my PC so I took them off.

Just write - recover lost disk - in google and you may find a lot of free or paid software.
Some software that you have to pay for let you try for free a partiel datarecovery.
