My first post in here. I have spent a few months in Cebu and getting a little sick of the smog, jeepneys and the over all city life I've heard a lot of good things about Dumaguete and might give it a chance. All I want is clean air, nice water and a GOOD internet conn to be happy. Guess a few of you in here have been living in Cebu and know the difference so please feel free to enlighten me :p Cheers Micke
Well, My Buddy Says.... Hello cebumicke, My friend who has lived in the P.I. for eleven years, spent most of that time in the Cebu area. And you are very correct.. according to him.. pretty noisy sometimes, and pollution can get to you sometimes too he says. He moved to Dumaguete region over a year ago, and does not regret it one little bit. Sure, it is slower lifestyle in Duma region, and if he gets the bad hankering for a good party he goes back over to Cebu with all of his good friends over there for excitement of that sort. He really likes the quiet, and it is definately cleaner and "greener" in his new Dumaguete area home. He loves it in Dumaguete. His wife is from that area, and she has family in the area too, so wife is very happy to be near her family. That fact alone makes for a much better HOME SCENE for a husband.. he he. If the wife is NOT happy, aint nobody gonna be happy! My friends happiness at making the move from Cebu to Dumaguete, is the main reason I am coming there in June.. Hoping for the best.. Pravdaseeker
HI there, and thanks for your reply! Yes i guess the nightlife is not the same as in Cebu and I do like to go out once in a while. Unfortunately I'm not old enough to really appreciate bridge or boule, and no wife or gf to force me to grow up :p I already checked out the ferry's Duma - Cebu and its not that long ride if I miss Cebu too much. Been reading a while in this forum and internet seems to be a problem and I cant have that. Need VOIP and a very stable connection or I will end up selling my body to sexpats and mum wont like that Valencia would be perfect since I am Swedish and not built for +30°C day and night, but from reading here it's out of the question because of the internet situation. Anyone in here have a connection in Dumaguete that will meet my needs? One example would make my day so I know it's possible. If not I will have to keep fighting the smog and the jeepneys. Thanks, Micke
I am also dependent on fast, reliable broadband. It has been very difficult getting it, but I have achieved reliability although not as much speed as I would like. I use Globe DSL and SmartBro wireless. Between the 2, there has only been one time when both were down at the same time. (They use different backbones.) If you only require enough speed for VoIP applications, I think you will be covered. I run 2 VoIP lines with rarely any problems. You are correct about Valencia...their is no DSL there. Only SmartBro and IT Outlook/Quest which are both wireless providers. However, just because they have DSL in Dumaguete does not mean it will be available in any particular area. You must check with Globe to insure that a port is available wherever you want to be located. Regarding travel to and from Cebu...there is a flight now! And at present it is cheaper than the ferries...and takes only 35 minutes. I wish it was daily, but still better than nothing!
Oh, I forgot to mention...I made the move from Cebu to Dumaguete. One thing I wasn't prepared for was brown-outs. If you conduct business through the internet, you will need to buy a generator as brown-outs are far more frequent here than in Cebu. The good news is, there are no water shortages here like in Cebu!
Just go to Dumaguete and have a look at it. You are so near. What is VoIP? I am working as a programmer and I dont have the slightest idea what that is . I am Swedish too I just love the 30 degress. We sure are all different. I am thinking about living in Dumaguete too. Good luck.
Hi! Thanks a lot for all the good info derivative_guru!! Guess I better talk to Globe and see what areas that are possible. Tjenare The Swede! Right now I'm back in Sweden for 3 months so not that close Voip = Voice over Internet Protocol - Ip phones in short. Please let me know how you find it in Duma once you are settled. Cheers!
Ok. I have a long way to go before I can actually stay more long term in the Philippines. I wish I could just move tomorrow, but I am not that rich yet . I hope you will be successful in your move there! I am not of much help for you but as A Swede I thought it was nice to post here too!
This is one thing I am looking at. Would be nice to give it try. That can be done here at home first. Try my wings...when I have lost my employment....
