My wife and I, like so many others these days, are actively searching for an offshore (outside the U.S.) retirement location. The tone and activity level of these boards certainly reflect a gentle, helpful community. We look forward to chatting with folks about the relative benefits of living in Dumaguete versus other parts of the Philippines.

Yes. Right now we're lookiing at a spring arrival. We have to visit the wife's family in Taipei, so the short flight down is not a big deal.

Thanks for the welcome. Teacher, "grouchy old men" I can deal with. If that's the worst of it in the realm of personalities, Dumaguete must be a genuine candidate for designation as a Shangri-la. :p I've never gotten off the train at Miao Li, but I'm quite familiar with it's location on the line between Taipei and Taichung.
