    what up,

Rhoody, finally looked up the other thread you mentioned, it seems a lot of talking interest, Did you guys pull it off? Are you still jamming? If there were a decent set of drums to use, I would like to try it sometime. I have no fear of embarrasing myself, done that too many times to care.

Hehe, Andy from Develin set something up, and I went there with my guitar, actually there were not many showing up, but we played loud... it's not a real good drumset, not tuned, but it made noise, like my guitar amp, so we had quite fun and beers... He was asking me yesterday to repeat it on coming Saturday i dont know If I can make it, I hope so...

    cheers

Well the drum set can be tuned easily enough, if there is a key, I'll buy one if neccessary, no sense playing on loose heads. I would arrange to show up no problem , except it is my honeys birthday this Sat, so unlikely on short notice to me going this time.
Organize something a week in advance and if we can at least get a bottom end and a guitar it's a band.

I actually really enjoyed the Hayahay regge Rhoody but got a little tired of being charged for 7 drinks after having only 5 and I'm not the first foreigner to complain about that. There is nothing wrong with the Hayahay that a serious fraud investigation by the local police couldn't fix. They have lost a lot of customers that way. I wish someone would sit down with Markus from the WhyNot and try and get him to get his SH!+ together for entertainment there. At least you're not going to get ripped by the waitresses there.

Chuck, the Reagge nights are great... for tourist and for a few month too, but almost 3 years here... it gets quite boring, especially the band does not improve ( sorry to judge them but I was working in that business for the first half of my life)

    cheers

I'm a musician also but never had to rely on it for a livelihood. I agree with what you are saying but it's the same everywhere. Out of the many hundreds of bands i have exposure to here in central Canada, I can only think of one that has the ability and good sense to change their song list frequently and that's because they are legendary performers who have been doing it for 40 years in the highly competitive Toronto area. There are a few bands that pretend to do it but it's the same damned tempo, key and chord structure with some different lyrics. I am really impressed with the fact that you've got student horn players in town who participate in these jams. We've got an amazing music school here in the city I live in that has produced some trully great musical legends but you don't see the students out jamming on the weekends with the guitarist/drummer/keyboard guys...don't ask me why. there seems to be this really bizarre social barrier to it or maybe they are too busy playing high end jazz and classical in there student lounges..One of my dreams whenever I get around to living in DGTE long term is to start breaking and making new bands there...Christ they are willing to work for such low pay ! It would be a a fantastic and affordable adventure producing some of the local talent.

You can study notes, but you can't study music... The musicians here are unbelievable good. They play each note perfect. But they don't life music. Each Stones cover-song is more acurate than the original, but it will never sound like that. The same count's for all music of all genre... You have it in your heart and you are great. You have it only in your fingers and you can earn money in a studio or cover-band. I play my gitar and my Marshal on 11 and with heart, I am not good, but when you come down, we get RHB go to Devlins and rock the place. for a beer and some food... that may be fun
and we call ourslf than: Kalbu and Pangit" hehe

good night and a last cheers

    Hey Canuk,
If you are from Ontario, toronto, You have not been to the REX hotel? Queen st jazz club that features student pick up jazz, local "bands", and big name acts periodicaly. Some of the best local music anywhere. Many stuents from the local universities, and and a few have already world class reognition. It was one of my favorite haunts when I lived there, even hooked up with them a few times on blues tunes.
Otherwise I would go to Healey's for good blues, jazz, rock, and open mike nights. Saw James Cotton there, great venue, small, appropriately grungy,, and easy to mingle with the performers.

So rhoody, lets do it, got a bass player?

I used to live in Toronto, but live in London, Canada now and yes, when I was in Toronto I hung out with lots of musicians. What I never seem to see in any case is horn players from the local University music programs coming out and jamming with other musicians in the bars. They would be very welcome if they did. Irregardless of how good the horn players are or how often they change their material, it was very nice to see and hear them at Hayahay. I haven't seen a bass sax in years either !! Maybe the problem is that it is "Reggae Night" so right then and there they are placing a restriction on what material they are going to play.

The Rex at least 2 years ago, used to feature many student ensmbles with horns etc, but that may have changed. I went and looked at Healey's web site and see his club is no longer on Bathhurst street, and now he has a new club in the entertainment district seating 600. bummer. Read also he has lung cancer and underwent surgery lately.

As far as Dmgte, I have always been surprised that there are not more cultural events involving the local universities, and more places featuring the talents of the students. Devlin's has sure tried but what success he had is limited apparently.
    So what is your axe?
