If you have a US Drivers Lic. and living part time in the Philippines and the other in US do you have to get a Internation Drivers Lic? If so, what is there to getting International Lic's? Alan, Maryann's better half
Hi Alan, If you live in US you can go to your local Automobile Association of America (AAA) and get it there for $15.00. You have to have 2 passport size photo with you and your state drivers license. Regards.
I thank you for that infomation. That is one membership I have had sence 1979, and would not have thought about going there to get one. That was simple. Thanks again!! Alan & Maryann
No, you need to get a Philippine license in order to drive past 90 days. An international drivers license is NOT a license to drive. It is little more than a trtanslation card to translate your license to other languages. It is completly invalid without a current license to go with it. Basically, it is a means for the motor clubs to take your money on a pretense. Thanks, Shadow for exposing this "licence" for the scam that it is! It's a well intended one generating revenue for the nations' automobile clubs but that is all it does.
Thanks for the internet sites. I will follow what the correct proceedures are in getting them. Alan & Maryann
Well actually, if your license happens to be in Hindu, it will translate it to English so it can be understood in the RP. However, if your current license is in English already, it will do absolutely nothing for you. It is not a license to drive, it is a translation card. Nothing more. Larry
why call it a "permit" If it doesn't 'permit' someone to drive in countries supposedly accepts them on the list? I've once gotten a International driver's "permit" many years ago & I do not recall that I needed to specify the country that I'm visiting. If one's going to be driving through or visiting multiple countries, does that mean he or she needs to get a driver's permit for each and every one of those country?
i thought an international DL is valid for use in a country for 1 year, you can drive for 3 months on a normal license here, so not really a scam!
In the Philippines, You are allowed to drive on your government issued license from your country for a period of 90 days. There is no government in any country that issues an "international drivers license". These are issued by auto clubs, NOT government agencies. There is NOT a license issued by an auto club or other non government agency that is a drivers license in itself. ALL must be accompanied by your government issued license. NONE are valid without. Once again, and international drivers license (AKA permit), issued by a non government agency such as auto club, etc., is nothing more than a translation card, which translates your government issued license to multiple languages. It is NOT a license in itself. If your license from your country is in English, an international drivers license will do absolutely nothing for you in the Philippines. I don't know of any simpler way to explain it. Larry
