I put 13 years into the building trades union before I got hurt and had to retire. But my union compared to the UAW, is a difference like night and day.

I'm thankful I worked union, mainly due to the fact that I'm drawing a pension, that the non-union guys doing the same job I did will never get-

What I don't understand, is how some politicians want to end collective bargaining rights of all the unions, EXCEPT police, and firemen unions.

I mean, is it really ok to screw the teachers, and leave the cops alone? Then again it does make sense. The rich NEED cops dedicated to their agenda (keep the poor folks under control) and a less educated commoner is easier to keep working in their dangerous low paying jobs.

Has anyone noticed unions only prosper in states where lawful citizens are not permitted to carry.

The uncorrupted and cleanly run part is the hard part. :D

Who pays for unions? Who pays for their benefits?? The consumer who buys (or or can't afford to buy??) the union workers product or service!

When consumers decide that "buying union" is not beneficial, they will stop buying, and that is the end of ANY union!

Teachers unions, police and fire unions are paid for by the taxpayer!

Do you think someone other than the taxpayers should pay for police, fire fighters or teachers? These services are the reason we have government. Otherwise we would all have to hire our own security guard, fire watchman, and tutor for our kids.

Do you think that these individuals should just accept anything the government (taxpayers) throw their way?

All the Fire fighters that died on 9/11 were union members, all the cops that died that day were union members. They rushed into those buildings because that is the other half of the contract. You get decent pay and benefits and in return you do what you are called on to do. It was not just something they did one day, but what they are called on to do everyday. From the time the professional fire service was formed until 2009 (last statistic I could find) one thousand one hundred and seventy four Firefighters died in service to the City of New York.

Two old sayings come to mind for me here

    1. Your only job security, is your ability to find another job.

    2. If you are above average in your trade, you will always be in demand.

Well, let's start by replying to Expatron comment about China. He is exactly right on target. Has anyone carefully looked at the "Lifan" copy of a Mini-Cooper? And, it sells for about $11,000 USD here as opposed to $26,000 plus for a Mini in the US.

Take any product that you can think of and China is killing us with their products. From the Lifan, to the Norinco copy of a 92F, to (of course) iPhones and iPads.

Now....for PatO that started this thread.... I am reminded of a friend of mine, and a Marine. We would go into a bar that was a hang put for Army or Air Force or Navy, and he would ALWAYS promise not to start trouble. But after a few drinks, he would say (in a very loud voice) "have you ever noticed that the (insert branch of service here) are just a bunch of (insert bad word here)?" and then we would spend the next half hour or so trying to fight our way out of the place.

Thanks PatO for reminding me of my younger years.
