This is the land of dengue fever, what more can we tell you?

 

Mosquitoes? Hardly any worth mentioning. Members from real mosquito zones like Canada and Alaska will tell you of blood suckers so large that they set off the NORAD radars and cause fighter intercept.

That said, there is one critter that residents and visitors should learn to recognize. that is the Aedes Aegypti. This is the vector for the spread of Dengue fever, which is no joke. This skeeter is larger, slower and distinctively marked. Note the brightly coloured tail in the image which follows:

They are more active at dawn and dusk. Ironically, I have seen them in other tropical locales but never here. I guess that I have lead a sheltered life.

 

I've never had a problem with mosquitoes here, even when next to flooded rice fields or sitting in my neighbors back yard for hours which over looks open fields and a creek. I brought insect repellent just in case, but have never used it.

 

I've had Dengue fever, but I was never aware of any mosquitoes biting me before or after I caught it.
He must be one of them stealth skeeters.
But like the previous poster, I've never had a problem with mosquitoes here.

But Dengue sucks, it makes your body hurt really bad.

I asked because I remember lots of Mosquitoes from Honk Kong, Borneo and in Manila.

 

The local 'Off' repellent lotion works for me. In the morning I put it in my coffee instead of milk or cream, then after a shower using Off instead of soap, I use it for hair gel following a good teeth brushing with Off, and shove a little bit in my boxers. That process allows me to skip lunch 'offing'. Dinner time if mostly grilling outside so I wear my head to toe netting, use Off to oil the grill. and light the Baygon scented coil under my boots and knee length socks. Bedtime is a private matter. Works for me!

Although I exagerated a bit on using off which I use vigorously, Asian mosquitos can be deadly. Not to take this too personal but I was the only survivor, barely, of 9 army special forces soldiers and 1 marine who were in a hospital ward dying from Japanese B type encephalitis. Somehow I recovered from an out of body experience and coma and was the lone survivor.
