We went in to town today and bought an aquarium - or the tank of holding as we have named it. this tank is for our snorkling trips on our beach, when we see a cool fish or shell we bring it up and put it in the tank... well that is if the critter will let us

so far we got a couple of tiny blue fish and a green one... I am telling you...it is hard work catching these fish with just a little handheld net

We had the local fishermen on the beach offering us some fine specimen the other day, but we did not have the tank up yet so we threw them back in the ocean...

It is really cool with an aquarium built here, and populated by stuff from the beach we live on

    Try a slurp gun

I've used a slurp gun many times in the Red Sea, Hawaii, etc. Usually works a treat for smaller fish, say up to 50-60mm. Good for slower moving coral fish, small wrasses, small butterflys, clowns, etc. Takes a bit of practise though...

Happy hunting....marine aquariums really brighten up a house too...

    Fishing in Dumaguete

Now I just gotta find a place in Dumaguete to buy one of those  I could not even find a small handheld fishing net here, so I had to go buy a piece of net, then a long piece of stainless steel which I bend to a circle...

Then I had to sew the net, this whole process took 4-5 hours - and all I got to show for it so far is a little black fish who was not fast enough. I almost felt sorry for the fella and let him back out

You might struggle to find a slurp gun in Dumaguete. I never see them except in US dive shops. That's where I got mine. You could probably order one online but otherwise...you'll be the net fishing expert...did the black fish have a white spot on it? Probably a damsel if it did. Good starter fish...pretty hard to kill...but they can be tough on other fishes in the same aquarium. Anyway, good luck! How does the snorkeling in your area compare to Apo Island? Is the water clear, plenty of colourful fish on the reefs, coral healthy, etc.

My wife is thinking Zambo if we move out there...she's really been talking up Bohol lately (and I'm trying to steer her towards Dumaguete - I think I'd be happier there). I assume, maybe I'm wrong, that the Zambo area has even better snorkeling and diving?

    Snorkeling in Dauin

The snorkleling here in Dauin is good, that is until you try snorkeling in Apo Island Marine Sanctuary. Nothing compares to that. We have a small santuary here in Maayong Tubig, but the best snorkeling there is around the sanctuary hehehe... go figure

The black fish had a grey spot close to its tail, we got 3 of those now  and one little red one... transparent tail on the red one.

    Slurp Gun

that gotta be a HUUUGE syrringe  some of the fish we catch are 5-10 cm.

The do-it-yourself gun looks interesting even though I am getting better with the net

I wonder why they are not using clear material, must be easier to get that near the fish.

nets are easier than slurp guns - have 2 - one with clear monofilament that tapers and goes back deep - the other obvious and green - chase the fish with the green net and try to scare them into the clear one : )
    - the only saltwater aquarium store i have found is in cebu city and if you feed the fish with fresh seafood it tends to cloud the water

In my experience...the slurp gun does takes practice...but it'll often get into the corals, when the fish hide, and it's usually not too difficult to get them when they think they are safe...nets and coral never worked too well for me..The net tag-team sounds worth a try though! Thanks for the tip.
