remember going to thailand six years ago.
when i arrived i was to be quite frank dissapointed.
I was looking for that adventurous tropical feeling with robinson crusoe beaches. Whilst some exist they are mostly commercilaized pits irrepairabley
damaged by mass tourism. As for the adventurous feeling
bit difficult to feel that with millions of other tourists. I remember discussing this with another guy and he said where now?
I said maybe the PHilippines but we both agreed that it was maybe too dangerous. However after 3 years of travelling around asia
i finally summoned up the courage to visit the Phils 3 years ago.
My intial reaction to manilla was one of shock. No real asian culture and it felt more dangerous than Brazil. This feeling didn't disssapear as my Philipino host
ripped me off on a night out. I was considering going back to bangkok when i thought i had to find my boun ty advert beach with an underwater wonderland.,
I got straight on a bus to Puerto galera and I wasn't disappointed.
ok the beaches weren't that nice but the snorkelling just blew me away.
plus there was tourist infratrcuture but it wasn't overloaded by tourists and in no way could be classed commercial. it had a real end of the worlkd adventurous feeling to it and i began to fall in l;ove with the Phils.
went to borocay next and this was too commercial for me but considerinmg it was the Phils number one tourist spot it wasn't that bad. it was certainly not another Phuket or samui and still the only people here were adventure travellers and retirees. No families or package scum.
On my next trip i went to dumaguete and Bohol and was blown away again.
dumaguete seemed like a quaint end of the world backwater with the stunning islands of Apo and bohol nearby for pristine beaches. I work offshore for 6 weeks and then get 6 weeks off and before i spent 6 weeks
in thailand giving bangkok as my home airport. I considered changing my home airport to manilla or possibly dumaguete.
ok i dodn't like the food much or the lack of asian culture but the adventurous feel and lack of commercialisation with hardly any tourists
combined with just exceelenmt diving which comes from not having mass tourism more than made up for it. Unfortunately I had
a back and leg injury and had a year off work and given the hospitals in bangkok i stayed there. finally i returned to the Phils this year and now have moved my base to dumaguete. However it now seems more and more tourists
are coming here to the phi,s and especially the visayas. Bohol and negros are going tgo become part of a super region. Dumaguete is getting a business park, bigger port terminal for more ships and bohol is getting an internationalk airport. All looks like the place is just becoming another globalised commercilised polluted dump with more boats, more people etc etc etc
    with increased prices.
Some will say this is progress and is good for the locasl but from my experience in thailand mass tourism on any scale only makes the government and already wealthy people richer and the average Joe only gets poorer
with local goods , serviuces and accomodation being pushed up in price out of the reach of them.
Just seems as soon as I have finally discovered my own near Utopia
it comes to the brink of becoming what I wanted to escape
All the things I love aboiut the place are fast being eroded
the question is if The Phils environment gets ruined then where next?
If the Phius gets commercilised there real.ly will; be no where left
    maybe Indonesia
All in all I'm very concerned. All these more boats and people will only mean one thing, environmenatl ruin
For all those who like the area now Ie deserted beaches
fantastic snorkelling/ diving, rustic uncommercialised resorts and towns
and of course the cheap prices make the most of it. I'd say we only have a year or two of that left at the most if glorias super region takes off.
Pity Fernando Poe didn't get in

Forgot to add that i went back to PG this year and i was absolutely shocked at how it had changed. massive hotels being and already been built. 4 times as many tourists with even families and package tourists and all coral in the shallow was dead. Thats why I chose Dumaguete as Bohol, Apo etc were still nice
however looks like they havn't long left either

Mai berai khap. Arai wah!...Pohm phut Thai dee. Worked up north in mid 70's at Khon Khien. Been back many times since and the difference in the Thai standard of living in the last couple decades is staggering. You've no idea of how poverty stricken the country was...it is heaps better now for the average Thai. The money...a lot of it anyway...has flowed down...And the government is actually doing a few things in rural areas, particularly since the mid 90's...areas which were completely ignored before...

But anyway....Samoa, Tonga, a few other places sprinkled around the Pacific still nice spots....if you leave Dumaguete...McDonalds would lose their best customer....

So you agree that Dumaguete and surrounds don't have long left?
    will the masses arrive?

    change

Yabs, as they say the only constant thing in life is change. If you resist change, then, you're bound to stagnate. If you view this so-called progress as a set back, then, that's just too bad. The good always comes with the bad. In my opinion, the reason why you don't want these changes is because you don't want to "share" what this island has to offer to the rest of the world:smile:

I can understand Yabs concerns to a certain extent although it has been my experience in the past 15 years that the environmental situation is improving (with a few noteable exceptions like the new shangri-la on boracay) due to increased tourist income providing leverage for political action to protect what remains. Dumaguete - and even Boracay - are a far cry from Pattaya and Phuket - this area needs more tourism but it is important that the future is considered - money is political clout and even the greediest politicians will be reluctant to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs if a profitable alternate plan is offered - no golden eggs - the goose is dinner - without tourist income there is no hope as the population will grow beyond the ability of the resources to feed everyone - development reduces population growth - it just has to be done with some thought to environmental responsibility - a delicate balance with dire long term consequences from erring in either direction
trashing the region you love on english speaking websites to discourage new visitors is counterproductive - it tips the balance towards northern asian package tourists that stay in 5 star resorts owned by super rich families - less positive inpact on the poor and more negative impact on the environment - just my 2 cents worth...

That's unfair. Change has the possibility to take many different forms, and seeing wanton destruction and this kind of slash-and-build mentality labelled progress annoys me. Local authorities can take steps to protect reefs and control the kind of structures which are being built on the beachfront without turning it into a free for all. No-one is saying tourists shouldn't come or hotels shouldn't be built, but what's the point of wrecking beautiful places and depriving them of the very reasons tourists came in the first place? They need to find a balance.

I can completely agree that concerns be vocalized about the importance of protecting the environment.
I'm wondering what contributions anyone here has made, either time or money, to environmental action groups?
If you have, which groups and how can others contribute?

I absolutely believe you hit the nail on the head! Doesn't want to share, and calls tourists scum??? My god! Also believe Tim has a point also, as to who on this board has actually helped with environmental causes or are we all just paying lip service? How do we help out? I mean, how can we actually help out the area in regards to the environment...as well as balance our own needs as well as the needs of people who experience severe poverty? I know Yabs is only blowing smoke out of his clacker because he doesn't want to share or to pay his fair share, but what about us who have common sense and do care? I'd be happy to join or help develop a group of somekind when my wife and I arrive, but until then, I'd appreciate any advice of how to help out now in some way.
