What are the beaches around here like?
I've heard the water is not very clear?
I was considering it as a beach destination as well as going to see the jungle.
I like swimming and snorkelling though so want clean beach

Depends where in Subic ya do your diving, back in Baretto and Calapandayan (Subic City) where the shipyard is the water murky and shitty but if you go across the bay or out to Grande Island the water is crystal clear most of the time.

Marky- I dove some wreck in the harbor back in '96 and had about 2-3 meter vis - a total crap dive imo - glad to hear the vis is better across the bay - that first dive sapped my enthusiasm for further explorations in the area

I piloted an SDV in the Navy so we did a lot of our dives throughout Subic and vicinity in the 80's.
I would guess you were diving on the old USS New York or the Jap ship wrecked off of the SRF pier.
Visibility changes in Subic depending on the season and tidal flow.
When you have an outgoing tide running there than sh*t river drains into the bay and really murks up the water, high tide during dry season is the best time to do dives in the harbor. The water is surprisingly clean.
Any other time and the waters contaminated with used condoms, broken slippers and dead animals.
    You know, the good stuff.

it was a jap ship near a pier - i think i remember the DM say something about it being used as a POW ship by the japaneese
didnt see any condoms or carcasses, but vis was really bad - less than 10 feet - sort of reminded me of Tampa bay - it was close to high tide but in mid july - and it had been raining a lot in the past week
