:o The thought of Dumaguete always stings my eye and gives me a deep feeling of longing. I am not born in Dumaguete, no blood relations to its people. I only went there to study in Silliman University thru a sponshorship, for four years, thirty years ago. Eversince we left, we've always made plans to go back even just for a brief glimpse on our beloved school and town. This part of our lives have rooted us to that particular time and place, that moving on became a struggle. What I'm trying to say, here, my dear folks, is that,by heart, more than blood and geneology, we've always considered ourselves as daughters of Dumagete. Would my being a Capampangan be a cause for discrimination? My kids and I are planning to migrate there after the school year ends.

Hi, light of the garden (love this screenname);Welcome aboard! After reading your post, your heart is certainly in the right place. The city of gentle people people, Dumaguete means "dagit", to captivate or "gidagit" means captivated (Hi guys, am I right on my conjugation of "dagit"?). Brace for the better, because Dumaguete has captured your heart!

I don't think your being a Capampangan would cause you a problem. It's nice to know you and
your family are planning to move there. My congratulations to you, in advance, you have chosen the right place!

Hi jimeve; I think they're all in the same classification. It also depends on how you use it. When using "snatch" in a sentence, take for example " the hawk snatches the chick".This usage is forceful & abrupt, usually used for objects perceptible to the touch or sense of vision. While word "captivate" means to fascinate by its special charm or beauty (of a place). For example, "Dumaguete, the city of gentle people, captivates my heart". Dumaguete has a special charm and beauty. By the way, I write poetry. Anyway, "dagit" is still widely used by most people. Thanks.

Thanks swany will tell my wife. Also dagit come from the Spanish pirates who captured the Dumaguetenia way back centuries ago, but your version sounds more romantic. Cheers!

    daggit

Dumaguete" was coined from the Visayan word "daggit" which means "to snatch". Because of the frequent marauding attacks of the Muslim pirates on the coastal town, and the power to attract and keep her visitors for good, hence, the word "dumaguet", meaning "to swoop," was christened to the village of Dumaguete. However, Diego Lopez Povedano in 1572, indicated the place as "Dananguet." But in 1734, Murillo Velarde referred to it, using its present name, as Dumaguete. cheers

    dagit

jimeve; Good for you. Did you do some research yourself, or did your wife furnish you with those info? She must be knowledgeable about the history of the city. I don't know much about it (I'm not really good at history), although I was born there. Yes, you are right on the word "dagit" means "to snatch". But the word "snatch" is not the word I would use when writing about the beauty and charm of the city. There's something about dumaguete, why people who have visited the city before are always longing to come back for a visit and some stay for good.
