Hey light of the garden, you should have no worries in moving here to Dumaguete. We're all very welcoming people. Of course most of us cannot converse in Tagalog so English and Bisaya are your choices. Welcome in advance!

 

I thought Tagalog was taught in the schools all over PI?

 

yes, its the pilipino subject. They teach you that at school.

Just cause it's taught in schools doesn't mean they would use it in Dumaguete. I'm not saying that people can't, I'm saying that some people won't. It's a matter of preference to the locals.

Friends, I have no problems with the dialect. I still can speak quite well. And I also think that learning and using other dialects or languages may be of one's preferrence, but, as a sign of respect to other visitors who haven't got the chance to get around, it could be helpful too! How would you feel if you chance on a place that doesn't speak any other dialect nor language than their own? Remember, English was not borne here. So, as we expect others to blend with "us", let's also be open to new practice. And make Dumaguete a place of gentle and considerate people.

Try learning to speak the language (don't have to be fluent) by listening to
fellow "kababayans" who speak tagalog (in my personal opinion). We also, have to use what we have learned in school. By doing so, we'd be able to communicate in tagalog, enough to carry a short conversation.
