The four universities in Dumaguete City have pledged to work together to promote common programs not only in the city but in the province of Negros Oriental.

Silliman University President Dr. Ben Malayang III, Negros Oriental State University President Dr. Henry Sojor, Foundation University Board of Trustees Chairperson Victor Vicente Sinco, and St. Paul University of Dumaguete President Sr. Nilda Masirag signed a memorandum of agreement at Foundation University last Friday to formalize the consortium.

Malayang, in a statement before the signing of the MOA, said the universities will initially be working together to develop sports, which will be spearheaded by Foundation University.

The sports program of the four universities will tap the expertise of Dr. Aparecio Mequi, dean of the FU Graduate School, who once headed the Philippine Sports Commission.

"If we are able to promote sports, there will be less and less kids who will go into drugs and vices." Malayang said.

After sports, the higher educational institutions will take on cultural programs, and then move on to academic programs.

Yes, it's a good start of helping each other to develop strong relationships amidst strong competitions!

Universities excelling in sports must help out those that are lagged behind. But usually, these are those that are not really excelling academically. But I'm sure, Silliman University has been producing great athletes like the Turibio, chan, etc. and has better facilities and best professors. It's not really Silliman's urgent concern.

Once this aspect is already addressed, then another area/s must be considered like university projects to include outreach/ biological conservation activities making them like "One Province, One Product" style. I'm sure Silliman University has a lot to share with the other universities.

After all of these pheripheral activities have improved then came the academic cooperation in all aspects including research. Since Silliman University leads in this aspect, then it has to share to those universities including in the consortium on how to excel on certain areas. Competion or duplication must be avoided. Say Foundation University excelling in sports, then it must expand the program making it an excellent one; all others, make the same program at low level just to assure compliance with the DepEd or CHEd requirements.

I'm sure, the consortium prospers towards better relationship, more concentration on excelling field/s and of course, more students.
