Hallo, paulbaguio. Welcome to the Forum. You must be acquainted with Ricardo "Cacards" Rodriques from the Negros Mountaineering Club, Cuernos.

Sometime between October and November last year there were a group of climbers from Cebu. We even have a photo here with us with one of the climbers taken at the Freedom Park during the Buglasan Festival.

    Were you one of them?,

hi josephen... i was not able to go to the buglasan festival even if I had prepared for it (wanted to join the mountain bike ride up to Lake Balinsasayao). My job required me to go somewhere else.. :(

I may have met carcards but I cannot recall.. my first and until now still the first encounter with the Cuernos was when I join the Summerassault 2005 (Mt. Talinis Climb) May 2005 sponsored by Cuernos... But I do have a photo at the freedompark where the provincial lagoon was the background. We where transported by the city's dumptracks to our jump off somewhere in Valencia..

    Hi paul
Since you have experienced a climb up to Talinis ,is it possible to come back the same day after reaching and exploring the top and not spending the night there.

    Thanks

    Hi PN, let me recall:
going up with 14 kilos backpack: 6 to 7 hours (safe recollection)
going down: 4 to 5 hours

note: going up we passed by lake yagumyum and then finally to Lake nailig, base near Mt, Talinis, but usually the highlight is Lake Nailig (highest of the Lakes).

Without pack, i would probably be able to hike up: 4 to 5 hours safest (safest for me i think, i would probably be trail running here), but I will need to carry around 4 to 5 liters (4-5 kilos) on my back. There is water in the lake, but unless you are use to drinking the water from the mountains, you may get stomach aches.

note: 1 liter = 1 kilo as 1 gram is 1 cc or the density of water is 1 gram/cc (density = mass over volume, mass is the gram and volume is cc or cubic centimeter) , and 1000 cc = 1 liter, while 1000 grms = 1 kilo, so there's the equivalent weight... hehehe :D ) It is also a rule that every hour you perspire, you need at least 1 liter per hour to rehydrate your body or else you will not be thinking clearly. So you need around 4 kilos of water to carry before you reach Lake Nailig.

Ok, so if you will go down without the pack, you may probably be going down 3-4 hours. Ok so going down is just gravity, but mind you going down is the hardest thing to do after climb. It is where you will feel your knees hurting you.. i guess what also makes it more challenging is that its not just a walk in the park that you can stroll on pave and wide trails, but you will have to crawl under roots (yes roots) and branches and hang on trunks that makes it slower.

Calculating the estimated risk... I think I would still be better off 2 to 4 hours slower with a pack than with out the pack and only water. My pack would keep me alive when darkness creeps in... it will contain my portable house and portable kitchen and portable refrigerator

Paul, are you from Baguio? My wife and I are going there on our next trip, and I've been looking at different hotels, but haven't found one yet. I'd kind of like something scenic. Any ideas? BTW, nice pic; aren't the views great in the Philippines?

hi wretched_hyena, im a nomad... one day i just find myself ending up in another city. Im originally from Negros Occidental (Bacolod), when I graduated from College, I work in Metro Manila area.. not for long I got a job in Baguio.... it is in Baguio where I really was happy and enjoyed the place (and found my SO: Significant Other)..hence I created my email and log-in name like that to remind me of Baguio. I only stayed in Baguio for 4 years I transferred to Cebu (well I got a better job here) because I did not like the way they manage me. Usually its not the salary that is primarily the reason for people quitting, its usually bad managers without any directions for their people... hehehehe... enough of that....

hmmm I think there are load of Hotels in the internet...
    List:
    1) Baguio Country Club - near Mine view park, no scenery from your window
    2) Bloomfield Hotel - Session road - your View: SM City Baguio.. hehehe
    3) The Manor - latest and probably the most expensive in the area - located inside Camp John Hay...

hmm, you are right, there are no hotels with scenery... you may be able to get one with a scenery but it may possibly be a house that you can rent for a week or for a weekend (which are not usually advertised over the internet)... you'll have to go to baguio and check with the local tourist information center...

Though you may not have a hotel with a view, I think you can enjoy the scenery and views once you go around Baguio. I don't think a hotel without a view would hinder you from going to Baguio, right?

Thanks a lot for your answer PaulB ,taking your time to give those elaborate details, quite helpful. So by the look of it , and taking it easy it will be better to stay overnight there then if plans push through. Our eldest daughter she's twelve would like to join the climb. She had done some mountains though (lower than Talinis) here in the UK with us, like the Ben Nevis (4,406 ft above sea level )and Ben McDui (just above 4,000 ft) the latter in the Cairngorms in Scotland. But knowing the heat as well back there would make the difference.Anyway,we have to give this some thought.Again, thank you.

Thanks. I had looked into the one at Camp John Hay. It looks nice, but expensive. I didn't get prices yet. We're only going to be there for two days, so price might not be too restrictive, but we will have my sis-in-law and her kids, so maybe it is.

Being a nomad is cool. Life is there to experience.

    Peace, Richard
