Yes, indeed. Just one of the many reputations they've been known for.

I haven't been to any Muslim area but I've heard a great deal about them through a relative who's father had Muslim blood. My mother had also spent some time living in Marawi City back in her younger days. According to her, most of the bad reputation you hear about Muslim Filipinos are only true of the uneducated ones. Those who've gotten exposed to the more westernized Christian Filipinos, and have went to college, are less fundamentalistic and friendlier than their closed minded brethren--who are then referred to as "Moros". And that's another peeve for Muslims, to be called a "Moro". Though the word originally had no negative connotations attached to it, in the Philippines, "moro" suggests unsophistication, and hence, inferiority.

Muslims in Mindanao are also known for their extravagance and their flair for showmanship. I've read an article once about a Muslim wedding where the groom's family bought and rented a hundred cars to be used to ferry the guests from the wedding ceremony to the reception.

I 'll try not to stereotype muslims. This is the same as what my uncle who used to live in Basilan said to us, 'never trust muslims' .But mind you even Christians are no exceptions, some are traitors and have their hidden evils too . I think in the end it's up to individual nature and attitude .I am convinced socio cultural orientation ,social class, the family background all these can affect how individuals think and behave and will most likely affect their outlooks and judgements .Islam doesn't teach how to cheat and murder or blow up another group ,but of love and respect .Though there are splinter groups of islam that attach themselves to fanatical fundamentalist teachings but it's a diff story .Yet same as christian religion, you have roman catholics, protestant presbyterians,baptists,mormon,7th day adventist, the jehova's witness, the evangelical denominations ,and even those christian cult groups.

Uneducated poor muslims living in a poor shanty towns , living only of hand to mouth existence , would not largely differ from christian urban poor who survive near smoky mountain in manila ,some will do anything to survive... some might steal if there's someting to steal ,rob if there's oppurtunity ,murder of it means big money in exchange ,children as prostitutes ...can be anything for their survival ,there's nothing to loose from these people ,and you can't blame them. It's human survival instinct to live and in the pursuit of life by whatever means .If you come in their way blocking the rare oppurtunity ,they will get rid of you or anybody. But this labelled crudeness and systemic violence doesn't represent the whole group of muslims. You met the educated and affluent muslims they are as refined and decent as the christian counterparts.Only because there are bad ones in the social order doesn't mean everyone in the flock are too.

You can't paint a whole group of millions of people with the same brush just because of the actions of a few hundred.

Muslims are just like any other group of people on Earth, you're going to find some that are rotten, no good sob's...and some that are righteous solid good people.

Anyway, theres a whole lot of Muslims in Dumaguete. A whole lot of the street vendors and bootleg video dealers are all Islamic.
I haven't heard of any problems out of the ordinary with these neighbors of ours. If "Muslims" in general are so notoriously bad, than why aren't there specific stories of incidents here instead of the innuendo in general?

There are lots of types of terrorists. There are Catholic ones in Ireland, communist ones in Peru, the Philippines and elsewhere, Jewish ones in Israel as well as Palestinian, Anglo American terrorists... Hate is not the answer. To find a group of people to make you feel better about yourself by setting yourself above them is also not the answer. If the powerful would not let greed for more power and money cause them to force others to live for them, this world wouldn't be filled with people desperate to survive or raise themselves from the muck. If nations would stop playing games with the poor and powerless, the world would be able to get along. That was the original purpose of the United Nations, but the problem is that is is run by the powerful, greedy people and nations to which I refer.

That's true, Pickled Newt. I had meant to include a counterpoint about the stereotype but thought I was merely relaying hearsay instead of stating an established fact.

Indeed, we find all kinds of characteristic human flaws across the different racial/cultural divides, but I guess the observations made about the Muslims in Mindanao can also be explained as a matter of prejudice towards members of the opposing camp, fueled by the longstanding rivalry of each other's religions.
