    crime

hi crazy horse there has been a lot of posts already about crime in dumaguete. I have been in P.I for 5 months 2 in boracay 3 months here in dumaguete. my experience -- an american ex navy I knew was attacked by some youngsters on white beach boracay at 3.30am he fought back and the attackers fled, here in dumaguete ,if you read the newspapers the early ours of the morning are the biggest risk of being mugged, same as any city. if you rent, best to have a fence around your house or a gated community, having said that my neighbours are great and keep a eye out if we are out, if you consider the poverty here, it suprises me that there is so little crime. check out jamaica, rio, south africa, us inner cities, london, I would feel safer walking in dumaguete than all of these, yes even my home town london, a lot of unsafe area's now. just take precautions watch your handbag and belongings, same as anywhere. filipinos are lovely people only a few are bad apples. hope that helps. by for now

Sorry to hear about your experience Eddy. I've always found Boracay to be quite safe for foreigners, apart from the odd bag snatching. Violence against tourists is almost unheard of, unless the drunken foreigner picks a fight or is very disrespectful to the locals.
I often meet Brits who used to vacation in Spain and other similar Euro destinations who commented that there is way more crime (pickpocketings, break-ins) in tourist resorts there.

I agree with you sirenna. Just arrived from a week holiday from Eastern Europe, Prague, Czech Republic. Despite of the several warnings from our local tour guide to be very careful coz pickpocketing is so popular especially to the tourists, there and then when we took the underground train, 3 men casually surround my husband as the train moved. I was destructed by an elderly man who was kind of being friendly. My husband didn't even notice until he was about to pay for our drinks.... All his debit and credit cards, 200 pounds worth in Czech currency. And the rest of the day we were on the fone long distance to report the cards lost and to cancel it asap. Luckily, we left few hundred pounds in our room safe to last us for the duration of our holiday.

To add to that, upon arriving home, we had noticed the sony video cam was nowhere to be found. We could only think that we left our cases and hand luggage in the hotel for safe keeping as our flight wasn't due til mid afternoon.

Prague the city itself is so beautiful, it has the biggest castle in the whole world, the interesting Astronomical Clock, fascinating King Charle's Bridge, the old and new town and the history of the Jewish Community. Culturally, Prague is fascinating but the local pickpocketers spoil the place.
