    Comedy

Does anyone know any honest, altruistic politician who's sole purpose and passion in life is the empowerment and improvement of the lives of the filipino people? Please feel free to list their names here. There is a congressman who many said is a good candidate. I believed them. Until I saw a billboard with his face on it, eating instant noodles, saying um um sarap! He is a current serving congressman. Talk about conflicts of interests. Isn't there any law here in Philippines where elected officials can't endorse any private corporations, let alone get money to advertise it?! In the U.S., you can't even manage your own stock portfolio when elected lest people accuse you of favoritism. It appears that here, most politicians have direct or at least indirect connections with corporate interests. How can you possibly be free from conflicts of interests? Corruption rules!
People in public service should be humble. It's called "service" for a reason. However, here in Philippines, people with political clout exihibit their power shamelessly, and stepping on lowlies are commonplace. Disturbingly, it is actually accepted by the people. But you have to give them credit. They provide endless source of comedy.

    My pet peeve

One thing more. What's with all these signs that say "from Congressman XXX" or "project of Senador XXX"? Are they really personal projects of the elected officials who spent their own disposible income to finance the various road improvements or school expansion projects? Or are they simply projects that they pushed through the legislature to obtain the fund? I am guessing it's the latter. And if it is in fact the latter, shouldn't the signs say "from the Taxpayers of the Philippines" and "Project of the Taxpayers of the Philippines"? It's simply so ridiculous, that it just amazes me to no end. It's a good textbook example of idiots trying to stay in power by brainwashing poor uneducated population. Shame on you, Filipino politicians, for being so ridiculous! Shame on you, Filipino taxpayers, for letting this garbage pollute your minds and landscape!

I would have wanted to mention other names in this thread, but I don't want to create more enemies. There are just a lot of examples around, but the question is this certain lady who poses herself to be a servant of the people in the first district of Negros Oriental.

I'm supposed to be on her side, but there are just a lot of injustices I would rather go to the other side.

It might have not happened here in this forum yet, but it always seems that those who have the brightest ideas and the most sincerity (at least, from the sound of their discourse), are also the ones with the least chance of winning an election (by reason of relative anonimity), or simply for the lack of intent of running for public office.

I guess, one of the major drawbacks in Philippine politics is the voting public's widespread lack of motivation to exercise the right of suffrage efficiently and intelligently. But then again, it's not an easy thing to vote intelligently when one's basic needs are barely met, which is true for a good portion of the population.

US President Reagan's election (who btw, held a BA degree) started the trend of Philippine celebrities seeking public office. A lot of them are still in office, and many if not most, may have lived up to their word one way or another. But more often than not, popularity via the entertainment industry superceded more worthy qualities found in opposing candidates. Thankfully, this trend is somewhat in decline as attested by the losing of one popular sportsman in a battle for the governorship of his hometown.

Among Philippine presidents, perhaps the only 2 who had real potential were the legendary President Ramon Magsaysay, and President Fidel V. Ramos of more recent times.

In my opinion, VP Noli De Castro has been doing fine as far as his avoiding controversy. I was kind of wondering how he would do since he was a popular champion against political injustice long before he ran for office. Another politician I am in favor of is Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago. Aside from having an exceptionally stellar academic record (perhaps, the equivalent of Marcos), she has so far never been involved in any anomalous activities.

Are you for real? After all you said about the politics in the Philippines? It's the same regardless of which side you choose. They are all corrupt. It would be much better if you run for an office on the platform to allow landownership to foreigners. But you will have to accept that many filipinas will throw eggs at you for taking away one of the biggest reasons why foreigners marry filipinas (and not just keep them as girlfriends). Am I being blunt? Sorry.

I am because I fear nothing. Do you remember the story of Lazarus and the rich man in the Book of Matthew? I believe that all people are equal regardless of material waelth, and that at death God favors the poor more than the rich. Now most people beleive that salvation can be bought, which is not quite true. My God has absolute values and morality.

I know that Limkaichong is a Chinese and her family values wealth very much. That's why they have to hide a lot of things to keep their wealth. Now, I have some wishes for her, which might be quite hard considering that she has to keep her "dignity, pride and standing in the society."
