    Yabs.....

Your post is kinda long and rambling, but I utilized my Evelyn Wood skills and zipped right through it.

I summerize that its kinda like a general Mk 1 Mod 0 b*tch and rant,
are you just mad Fred Poe is dead?

Yeah, you're right Yabs, Dumaguete is going to hell in a hand basket with the invasion of McDonalds, Robinson's Mall, etc. Where are you going next? Thailand's out. You don't like Koreans, Japanese, Americans and God knows who else so where will you live without being exposed to those low life creatures? Wherever you go I hope it is soon.

Surely it's not a black and white issue. Calling people who wish to protect beautiful places "selfish" is unreasonable. One day, though probably not within our lifetime) the unspoilt islands will all be gone. Wiped out entirely. And when there is NOTHING left, who will we be calling selfish then? Those who tried to preserve them, or those who destroyed them through greed and carelessness?
Let's not assume that Yabs (or anyone else who advocates caring for the environment) is only blowing smoke. You have no way of knowing if he (or myself, for that matter) are actively doing something constructive to help.

    Just out of curiosity

    Hi Sirenna,

It's nice to meet you. I haven't had the pleasure of talking with you before. Out of curiosity, how many Island nations have been destroyed by progress? Lets even throw in a U.S., Hawaii. I'll admit, many Island nations have changed, even the United Kingdom has changed considerably, but environmentally destroyed? I think my assessment of yabs is right on the mark, but thats beside the point. Moving a nation ahead is going to happen regardless, and the environment is also changing, through no fault of the Philippines. The challenge is to balance the environmental changes with population, and economic changes. This is only my opinion, but I'd think putting a meal on the table supercedes anything else. It's kinda of like, well exactly like the life pyramid that is discussed in university (so long ago for me), basic needs come first above all else. The alternative is starvation and death, so no offspring to worry about the future anyway. Just my little ol' opinion. Welcome to the forum and please continue to share your thoughts and opinions, but please do it without insulting everything and everyone under the sun like that other poster has in many of his posts.

    why are you so arrogant?
also what makes the life of humans worth far more tha n sanything else
or indeed the basic needs of humans way above anything else?
As for food on the table your idea of developoing the islands economically to provide this is way off the mark.
The basic protien staple of the Filipino people is fish
how is e conomic development at the expense of the marine envt helping this?
Its been proved that the fish sanctuaries where everything is left alone provides more fish than anyhting else
building big gawdy resorts with jetskies and banan boats is doing nothing
    to ptreserve the envt.
There is no reASON TO FULLY DEVelop in phuket style everuy single island.
the only reason is as sireena says through capitalist greed.
When you have no fish left to eat don't come crying to me
its a sad fact that quite soon due to overpopulation, pollution and lack of regard for the envt that most fish will dissapear or go too deep to catch.
it is already happening to tuna stocks.
I would educate yourself and not view the world through mere capitalist eyes.
as for what i;ve done, I've writteen letters toi the WWF, to individual developers, the DOT and spoken with park officials only to get no where
seems the best route is to open as many eyes as possible\
we only have one planet and when its all been plundered what then
will i be selfish for wanting to preserve it

Firstly, I live on an island which is being destroyed by careless and unregulated construction and disregard for the environment.
Second, "moving a nation ahead" doesn't have to mean stripping it of all it's beauty spots. This is why some countries have protected areas and national parks. I hate to see what is sometimes nothing more than wanton destruction by greedy developers who move from place to place luke a plague of locusts labeled "progress". Progress has the potential to go in many different directions, given the right planning and care.
Thirdly, have I insulted anyone here? I can't recall that I have. If anyone was offended, I apologise.

    Blame yourself

You have to distinguish between the different types of progress. The type of progress by filipinos in general are very shortsighted and are ugly. Cost-driven, not environment driven. You appear to be a filipina, so you know your countrymen well. The architectural and infrastructural works suck.
The type of progress led by foreign operations, on the other hand, are in general tastefully done, and years of experience behind it. If you want to blame anyone for the crappy progress, blame yourself and your own countrymen. The last I heard, Robinsons and SM are filipino owned.

How rude. No, I am not a Filipina, but even if I were I would find that offensive. Just taking the island where I live I can see many ugly structures being built, some of them on areas of outstanding natural beauty. And yes, some are Filipino owned, but as many others are Chinese, Korean etc.

    Yes, Some

Ok, thank you for correcting your words to "some". Next time, please don't generalize and point fingers at certain ethinic groups, because they might consider that rude also.
