We found this fish off the coast of costa rica on the Pacific side. (very far south). I have never seen anything like it and cannot identify it. It has a beak and looks like it just died as the eyes are still clear.
It looks like a creature from outer space or close to a nuclear site!
    Any ideas anybody?

    Porcupine or Puffer

I am only guessing but my money goes with either porcupine or puffer fish. They normally have a beak and I can see the spines so 2 out of 2.

I guess I should try to look up a picture of a puffer fish in its deflated form to compare.

    Hi Mimi,

Kianna has a good guess, because of the teeth, but Phil-diver will not loose his money, it's definitelt from the Porcupine-Puffer-family. How big is it, it also could be a Toby (belongs to the puffer-family).
Hope we could help you a bit

    cheers

    Rhoody

    thanks

    Thanks to all of you.
I have had this picture for over a year and could not figure it out.
I have now compared it with pictures from the blowfish, puffer family and they look quite similar. But pictures are usually of a blown up fish and this one was not.
Don't know if you can connect to this link but there is more info.
So, no Philippinediver, this is not your last girlfriend's mother. Also the fish is quite beautiful when still alive.

I as well think its a puffer fish. For sure. A bloated one.
Can't tell exactly which one, 'cause its skin is not nice anymore. By looking at the rest of the markings it could be a Map Puffer (Arothron mappa), which gets 60-80cm at all and theirs teeth can easily chop off your fingers. Or Arothron stellatus which even gets 1.2 m.
Map Pufferfish, Arothron mappa or kiss

    cheers

    thanks to all of you.

I guess it has been narrowed down to the puffer family. They are usually so colourful and this one isn't. I still think it's weird looking because the eye is till so clear.
So I guess I can still go swimming in the ocean and nuclear waste has not yet hit the waters around Central America.
    Thanks again..
