I like the idea of having access to funds in Duma from a bank or financial institution in the US without paying large fees and incurring poor exchange rates. Anyone have a solution? gilby
Dollar Account I would set u pa Dollar account here in Dumaguete and wire transfer the money straight in to it. That way you keep your money in Dollars so they can't screw you on the exchange rate...
Atm Hello, I did not really pay attention to any fees when I got home to the States, but using ATM's with the same logos on my USBank Visa cards were as effortless and instantaneous in DGT as home. This was also true in Manila.
withdraw money atm you paid alot 5 dollars for every transaction plus the lower rate of exchange that you get in manila just check it out
ATM versus headaches It's all relative Doc. The 2 times I used ATMS in my two week intercontinental no holds barred vacation were well worth the few bucks fee. (Something I will avoid here in Ohio) As for the the exchange rate, it was the same as anywhere else "legit" in MNL. I did pay attention to that. Some shady guys offered me hookers, Viagra, and a slightly better rate, but that has wrong all over it. Trust me, I don't throw away money, so I will be following your lead here to see if I can pick up any tips before my next visit to DGT in September. I did find this out last visit, I paid a one peso/dollar premium at the bank for exchanging $20. bills versus $50-$100's. I don't know the logic, but next time I am bringing Benjamins to avoid this. One other thing I did was to open a free checking account at USBank. They offer a free Visa Debit card with this. I keep very little in this account and I put a few hundred at most in it when I travel for backup. I use it at hotels etc. and the chances of me getting burned are low because I rarely keep it "stocked". Also I can transfer money in there securely over the net from my primary account instantaneously and free of charge. Any ideas or warnings you have are very welcome. These things add up fast! Thanks, Dave
i agree with longtimejoe. for me, this is the most convenient way in accessing when travelling. i check online where the atms are located before travelling as well.
Now I'm kind of confused..I know, that's not hard to do, however, I'm still not sure how to do transfers without paying fees. Are you folks saying that if I have a checking/savings account in the states that also have branches over in Duma, that I won't have to pay any fees to get money out? Is there an HSBC bank in Duma? Anmyone up for the challenge of straightening me out and give me an edumacation please?
