    Alan,

I think you've been given some great advice here with the exception of Tagatay...that's my opinion...

If I had to choose somewhere other than Dumaguete It would be Davao...

    Good luck,

    Southerndon

Yes, I've had some good reports about Davao too. Haven't been there myself, so no first-hand opinion. But we do have a couple Filipino friends from the area and they have been real ardent supporters of the city. Anyway, the Philippines is a very nice country with a lot of nice people...travel around and have a good look - I'm sure anyone can find a place to call home...I know a lot of people who've retired to a simple, mind-numbing existence here in Oz, bored to death and worrying about whether they can afford that night out, or the dental work they need..etc...Screw that...there are options out there...

    Hi Alan,

SouthernDon's friend here. I live in Leyte, about an hour and a half drive from
Tacloban. As Don said, no major complaints from me, but I really don't live in
    the city of Tacloban.

As far a living there, it would NOT be my first choice. Most of us have the
fortune (or misfortune) of living where our filipina spouse originally came from.

Leyte is mostly rural and poor. There is not any major shopping mall on the
    entire island.

There are a "handfull" of foreigners to be found here and around, but for the
most part are here because of the spouse. Most would prefer to be elsewhere.

When I must go into town, Tacloban, I generally dread it. It is crowded, dirty
and except for a MacDonald's (not a big fan), there is not much there.

I hear that there are plans to build a Robinson's department store, but as of
    yet not much progress.

So, bottom line, Tacloban would be at last on my list of places to live. But
to be fair, you would have to visit and determine that for yourself.
