to anyone thinking of living here I will say this
If you want western standard amenities, good shoipping and stable power
    then forget it
if howver you seek a more rustic place blissfully uncorrupted by a lot of western junk you see elsewhere the n this maybe the place
no reaL HIGH rises, no real shopping mall (yet) and only one Macd's
Power cuts are annoying but id rather put up with that than live in
concrete sh*tholes like cebu or manila or dust holes like Angeles
    (sorry Dane)

I suppose you can disappear fast via airport, but it would be bit difficult if you have your own house and not renting. The news is only discouraging because I plan to build, not rent in the place ultimately selected.

I would hardly call Dumaguete rustic. It is a good sized city and nice surrounds.

    the term is relative
its rustic when compared to Milton keynes thats for sure
its a town but most of it feels semi rural

    Rhody is right

I am full with Rhoody when it comes to .. a good place to live...
You will benifit a lot when living here but things are changing here so rapidly that some old habits and lack of interest to make a drastic cahnge MUST be put into motion. Electricity is a MUST for those that come from abroad. Likely my neighbours , all fishermen don,t use there one or two bulbs (lights) at the daytime ,nor they have a Ref or freezer ,l not to mention a full airconditioned house or a computer that is ön duty" 7 / 24...
Now so many foreign investers and retiring USA but Eu as well come to stay here , the supllyof power should be smooth...

I come to know from the Mayor that it is the wish of City Hall to have an other new Waste Water Plant be build ASAP as he is forseeing problems in the near future. He is a man with a great vision and a lot of good ideas . Lets hope you will be able too do all according to his plans..

for the complainers, (whiners), if you don't like what a particular place has to offer, then certainly it is your choice to go find a more suitable locale to meet your particular needs.
The Philipines is no different than many other developing countries. Try the Dominican Republic sometime if you like brown outs.To come a visiting then quickly demand western style reliability with electricity is arrogant in my opinion. Some people want all the benefits of the laid back way of life the Philippines offers, and all the luxuries from back home. Its this attitude that will eventually make the Philippines like any other spoiled paradise.
Better you go feed a family here, or build a house for some poor folk. Volunteer, or simply go live in the mountain for a couple weeks, then dare complain about your poor tv, computer, music amplifier. Some people just don't get it.

Sorry, this is a button of mine...

PS, have only a tv, cd player microwave and ref, all about two years, no regulators, no problems. My laptop is dc of course. Thought about actually getting a generator once, but when the electricity goes off, it doesn't get cold, the water still works, and I can still cook with gas. Go outside and enjoy the day.
Or maybe you need your aircon...

I mentioned it in another thread, but I really can't find any reason why to build an own house as a foreigner, even you are married here. Circumstances in countries like the philippines can change so fast and if I don't like the place for whatever reason(new major, new karaokebar in the neighborhood or just a small insault to a local), I can move, even with wife and Kids. I really would think way more than twice before building a house in the Philippines. There are too many great places here to wast the "old days" in one spot

    cheers

    Rhoody

I basically agree with most of your arguments totally, and believe me company I work for supports some hundred philippinos and quite some houses were build with the "way more than average" income of that company. The Question is with what promises some Government or big local companies getting investors and their Dollars from outside to Dumaguete and then just can't keep up with the promisses they made...
When I finish work and go to my small house I am happy to be here and enjoy exactly the same as you do.

    cheers

    Rhoody
