As I got to town yesterday morning I saw the smokeclouds, wondering whats going on,
The whole complex next to Octagon/Steds going south is flat. Even a big old building on the other side of the street cought fire and burned down.

the following article is originally from :
    Dumaguete City News

A BIG fire razed the south commercial district of Dumaguete City Tuesday dawn.

At least five business establishments, a medical cooperative, a dental clinic, a pawnshop, and a row of three-door apartment of both sides of the south end of Perdices Street were razed almost to the ground.

Fire Marshall Ranulfo Sayson said initial investigation revealed that the point of origin of the fire started in Color Kingdom Paint House. It spread to nearby establishments and to the other side of street, destroying houses and the medical cooperative, which were made of light materials. A three-door apartment was among those destroyed by the fire.

Fire trucks from Dumaguete, Volunteers Chinese Fire trucks, Silliman University Fire Trucks, Solon and Matiao water tanks, Bureau of Fire Protection from San Jose, Sibulan, Valencia, and Chinese volunteer brigades helped put out the blaze.

Sayson said he does not discount the possibility of a defective electrical wiring connection as the cause of the fire.

He said he could not yet determine the total value of the fire damage and would have to meet with the owners of the establishments and stores to ascertain the amount lost.

The fire chief warned old houses and establishments to check the electrical wiring connection and unplug appliances when not in use. No casualty was reported, however.

Forgot my camera, try to get a picture in today...

just was in Town and took also some pictures of the location. Up to know there are , god thanks no reports about casualties.
1 st picture: the left over of the building across the street
    2nd picture: nothing left.
    3rd picture: melted sign-board
    across the street
4th picture: 100 hands helping, amazing on the 2 signboards on the right is announced where some already opened again.
5th picture: The roof was on fire, below business as usual (bike-rental)

I know, that this is maybe not the best promotion for Dumaguete, but part of the life here with all the wooden buildings, crazy electric wirings and and and...

just don't answer and it will go down the list...

    cheers

I'm glad nobody was injured but I do feel bad that someone has lost their home and/or business.
However, I don't see a reason to let the thread go down the list. This is a reality of life in the Philippines and other countries as well. Anyone planning to visit or relocate should be aware so they can be prepared. Construction, electrical and other codes can be and are bypassed for various reasons. Mostly for expediancy and lower cost.
Not too long ago, nearly the entire market center of Boracay burned down because someone was manufacturing chinellas in a back room. Of course, all the tourism dollars allowed it to be rebuilt quickly and better than ever.

Two biggest reasons for fire in Philippines,
    1. faulty electric, appliances, service, et al, or
    2. Arson.
Judging from the big response from fire companies, this might be the former, unless they were there to only protect the surrounding buildings. Usually when they don't show up until the fire is almost out you can suspect the latter.
But in all fairness since this was downtown on Perdices, chances of an honest attempt to protect life and property are real.

    I'm not really that cynical.

Drove by yesterday, and everything was still smoldering. Very scarey to think of the whole city being so vulnerable. However picturesque, the old wood buildings are really fires waiting to happen.
