Hi all, I have been reading some of the Threads in this forum and thought it good to introduce mysef as well.

My name is Stephen and I am from Halifax in Eastern Canada. I retired young from the Air Force a few years ago and, after bouncing back and forth between travelling and working, I have decided that it is time to get out of Dodge while I am still young enough and healthy enough to appreciate it. I went to the Philippines this summer and really liked it alot. I have since met a wonderful girl from Dumaguete (on the internet) and I have decided that I am packing up and heading to new horizons.

I have read alot about Dumaguete, especially on this site. It seems to be exactly what I am looking for; not too big but with all the necessities; nice people, reaonsable prices, and warm weather. how could I resist?!

I will be moving to Dumaguete in early March (already have my ticket, albeit one way), taking an apartment and getting settled in. Eventually, I hope to marry, build a home, and get involved in some kind of charitable volunteer work. I haven't quite figured out that part of the equation yet. I'll see as time goes on.

Thank you all for the information you provide on this forum; your pictures, your advice, your experiences. It has been instrumental in my decision.

Looking forward to meeting some of you,

    Stephen

Dumaguete is a great town I fell in love with it as soon as I set foot there.I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

I do need to tell you one thing...you will need a round trip ticket to get into the country. One way won't cut it...

If I'm wrong I'm sure these guys will set the record straight...

    Good luck,

    Don

Welcome Stephen! Good luck with all your plans.

Yes, one way ticket won't be allowed. I got a round trip ticket and had to get a partial reimbursement since I wasn't returning within the year while in Manila at the Airlines Office unless something has changed since then. One way tickets can however be bought when RETURNING back home.

    No Return Ticket Needed

    Hi Stephen,
I don't know how the check-in counters in the US or in Canada work as I am from Germany. On my last two trips to Germany they did not ask at all.

You definitely DON'T need a Return Ticket if. You need to have a ticket to leave the philippines. (Again coming from Germany, nobody asked me there and nobody asked me in Manila)

Here is what you do to make everything in a 100% legal way:

You get your one-way ticket to the philippines.
You book a departure ticket online from the philippines to another country in south east asia.
There are cheap rates available from different airlines. one of the chapest places to fly out is Clark-Airport. There are several airlines flying from there on low rates to KL, Singapore, Kota Kinabalu, Jakarta, HK, Bangkok and many more, also Cebu-Pacific offers very good rates.

You print out you e-ticket and thats it yuo got your flight out booked, so no need to spend some hundred of Dollars for a return ticket.

You also should be able to get a flight for around 2000 PHP (US$50).
If you want to change that ticket then to another date it is around 200 PHP (5 US$)

    This Links may help you.
    .::Diosdado Macapagal International Airport::.
Cebu Pacific Air - It's time everyone flies.

Look for a nice destination, you never know if you wanna go on a quick holiday.
    BTW I was in August in KL and flew from Clark, I had a package-deal Clark-KL-Clark, 4 Nights Bed/Breakfast for 220 US$.

I hope I wrote it understandable and it helps you a bit. Just ask for more info, we are all happy to help you.

    cheers

    Rhoody

Thank you all for the warm welcome and the advice. I am really looking forward to my arrival but, rest assured, I will be careful with any decisions regarding long term plans. Here's to a long happy life in the Philippines!!
