    The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has given overstaying foreigners 60 days to legalize their stay and renew their expired visas or face outright deportation and ban from reentering the country.

    BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said the agency’s Management Information System Division has developed a program that can identify overstaying foreigners in the country.

    It can be done by simply typing the person’s name, gender and age which will then be verified by the BI’s central database.

    All the necessary data and information of foreign nationals who arrive in any international port in the country are stored at the BI’s master database.

    This provides BI personnel instant information about the exact status of a particular alien.

    I seem to remember this threat a few years ago. Do they have any plan on place for hunting down overstayers? Does the "good guys in, bad guys in" hotline number still work?

    No reason to believe this will ever get off the ground, its all in the wording

    "simply", thats a word smuggled in by foreigners

    People with overstay are people with different kind of problem already, no money, mental illness, on the run for authorities. If you have to overstay it has never been a problem go immigration say sorry I been sick or it couldn't come because of snow. If just you have the money and pay a penalty. When I was new I buy mistake was one month late, look in my passport, then saw my mistake, went online to get info, I don't sleep all night, jail time and deportation and what else people tell you. Next morning I sit outside immigration in Tagbilaran and wait they open. I explain my situation, the laugh and say no no, pay penalty 1500 pesos and then they told me the procedure for overstay, that time. After around 1 year maybe Manila will send "people" out and look for you, simple overstay like 1-2 month is not a problem if you just follow up and pay. Sorry how difficult can it be to pay the visa, I have never had any problem and now 6 months on a tourist visa, I find it easy

    Your overstay comments are for short term overstayers. In the short term, it is a trivial matter as you say. If your overstay exceeds 1 year, you will be deported and blacklisted from returning. This includes BI jail time. It goes from a trivial matter to something very serious. People charged with overstays for greater than 1 year have not always been poor. Some simply disrespect the system and are shocked by the consequences when they are caught at the airport trying to leave the country for any reason. The consequences for overstaying between 6 months and 1 year are less clear and may be inconsistently applies depending upon the whims of the BI agent who catches you. I doubt that BI has the resources to catch long term overstayers except at immigration checkpoints when leaving the Phils; I have known I long term overstayer, who hadn’t been caught for 5-6 years until he passed away from cancer. Yes, he did get away with it because he never left the Phils; however, he did have a constant fear of getting caught which really impacted his quality of life. He was not poor; he had tried to renew his balikbayan visa by going to Hong Kong for a day and he was a rare case where BI would not renew his visa. He then went to s lawyer and became frustrated by the bureaucracy so he just gave up. He was afraid that when driving his vehicle he might be caught at a checkpoint. I doubt BI has capability to catch a violator in this manner, however.

    If i remember as it stands from the local Bi office you can go as far as 6 months as an overstay,but go over this the application needs to go through manila with a reason why you overstayed.

    I know a guy who stayed many years without every doing a visa extension saying he didn't have the money but really he could have even though things were tight for him. I was surprised to find a friend helped him talk his way to being waived and allowed out and then he came back shortly after a couple years ago. Wonder if he's been paying his fee's now or not.
