Tru one mans’s delight is another man’s poison .

Most foreign western elements who visit or settle longer in Dgte have Filipino connections ( having Filipino spouses from the area / relations are very common ). Rarely you see westerners of themselves choosing Dgte to retire or live ,apart from those adventurous and only a handful who got job assignments in this country or nr the area . You see it in this forum alone whr Dgte expats, most have filipino partners as evidence .But this must be changing , due to media publicities ( a powerful tool ) initiated by govt for economic gain ,which includes Dgte plus this govt’s efforts to attract foreign retirees. I haven’t seen here in UK anything like it about the PI , but possibly more in Japan and Korea where aggressive advertising is happening ,Durano loves it there, reason for the ‘invasion’ ,lol. Nonetheless to mention being a university or student town attract some foreign students to this city as well . Perhaps I’m one of the silent majority of Filipinos that aren’t bothered with foreigners coming to my area .If they bring in economic goodness, then so be it .Just to have clear definition of the rules and boundaries and implementation of the laws, and like being in Rome have to act like the Romans do, then problem will be minimal.

I don’t know about attitudes of Americans towards ideas of living abroad,do they all abhor seeing other of their kind /colour and stay away from those areas .I’m certain I don’t like to bump into my neighbors on my holidays abroad .But if I intend to live abroad it’s nice to choose a place where few of my kind or people with the same category as myself living in the area .But taste varies though . But whos judgement was it anyway about revulsions or negativity seeing other foreigners or expats crowding in Dgte apart from only an odd few who loves strange ‘isolation’ I think and you wonder why ,reasons why they left their countries and are foreigners themselves, lols this funny :p . The increasing scene of foreigners living and visiting in Dgte also contributing to the insight into a place which is relatively a foreigner friendly and accepts their presence in good terms ,safer and with number of better amenities and perhaps more improved ones to come catering to wide range of consumers ,can be viewed as another aspect of economic progress, again othrs might hv other definitions of progress .

This is kind of strange , why be anti ... native Dumagueteneos aren't even bothered ,majority are friendly ,gentle and accepting ,why not be just nice as dumagueteneos ?

RHB and Pickled Newt as a foreigner in the PI I have always treated people as I would wish them to treat me, with respect and politeness, just the same as I do here in the Uk.
While in Mindanao I did come across a very rude English man in the offices of the local council, I ended up apologising for his behaviour and explained he was lacking up top! The young lady with him perhaps was unaware of the situation but I did not have the chance to speak to her.
Most English men I know married to Filipina's are most respectful and kind please dont judge us as a nation by the bad behaviour of a few.

There are those few Americans who somehow manage to win over a sweet but naive Filipina who didn't learn in time that their man is a jerk and a loser. I've met more than one of these fellows and it's quite embarrassing.

The United States has a very diverse culture due to the many immigrants here. If an American grows up in an area with great diversity (typically the larger cities and coastal areas) they tend to be very tolerant and open to all peoples. Unfortunately, there are those who are not.
    Again, quite embarrassing.

Newt, I'm surprised it is not done in the UK. I'm from the Netherlands (UK's neighbour) where the PI ambassador actively promotes the PRA (Philippines Retirement Authority) program to get retirees to the Philippines and offering some benefits under the SRRV visa.
I was one of the lucky "victims" 1.5 year ago. I'm still happy with that after having struggled through a difficult first year because of the rather bureacratic stuff.

Oh well the PI ambassador in holland must be doing his job @jellyfish,dunno about the one here in UK, guess still enjoying lazing around .Some brits without philippine connections think the philippines is located in remotest islands in the world ,cities are so filthy, people in rags and with cannibals living in the islands.

    it's more the vice-consul

It's specifically the vice-cunsul in Holland, Mr. Adrian Cruz who is the motor behind what the Embassy is doing. Last September he organised a meeting in my hometown (I was one month back home) for getting retired Dutch people interested to come to the Philippines. I could attend that meeting.
Meaning to say.....it's really dependend on initiatives from 1 person. But there is much more to improve by embassies as well in Holland. Most of my relatives still believe that going to the Philippines is asking for troubles by muslim movements. They have no idea that muslim percentage is very low, that only a few muslims support the tricky clan and that even in the south you can live nicely as long as you behave well.
We should send our embassies some points for improvements. Maybe they will spend less time to parties, golf etc.... But I don´t mind if they combine that with real promotive activity. :D

and Abu Sayef hiding behind every tree from Luzon to Mindinao. To give equal time, The U.S. promotes this myth on there Embassy and CIA web sites. not mention deadly diseases which you surely will contract if you set foot here.

what you said is close to what I believed before I met some real Filipinos working in Canada. I live now very near a mosque and muslim community, good neighbors.

I don't really see it that way. Giving an advisory to be aware when traveling, to me, doesn't promote the myth of terrorism. I think they are just being deligent to their citizens.

Sorry, an overstatement on my part. It is not all myth, just that it is a geat exuse to forward other agendas as well.

The U.S. treasurey dept. on behalf of the Social Security System sent a team here to determine why and where all the SS cheks were going to the Philippines. They want the money to stay in the U.S. of course. There is good reason. The dollar is at an all time low, par with the CAD, first time in 40 years I think. And the Euro is at 1.40+. Americans looking for an alternative retirement environment where they can live above the poverty level, speak their own language, and enjoy a warm climate, might well consider the Philippines. Except their government warns against it.

10% of the Philippine gross national product comes from foreign workers aboad, (13 billion USD per year) not all of course from the U.S., But the U.S. is the largest paricipant. I draw my own conclusions.
I think the US is just trying to stop the seeping of dollars abroad.

Yes there are bad guys out there trying to do the U.S. harm, consider this just another perspective.
