I've just arrived for an extended visit to the Philippines, and I'm looking for a house to rent in Dumaguete for the next few months. 3+ bedrooms, nice environment, secure, preferably with a pool and a nice view. A 3 month rental , possibly more. If anyone knows of a place, I'd appreciate the info.

    Many thanks
    Chris

    Re: Rental Information

Hi Chris: I'm a new member and as of a few days ago, I proposed a similar hypothetical question to the forum. I informed the forum that I didn't need the house yet, because I wasn't in the PI as of yet for retirement. My inquiry was about the average costs of a 3 bedroom house without pool. One of the responses that came back to me was that in order to get the most responses and the best prices, you would need to hit the pavement and look on your own. One response to me was that the prices ranged P8000 up to P25,000 per month. What that means is not only the classified ads, friends, neighbors, and real estate people, but to almost do door to door inquiries. That seems to make a lot of sense to me. Hope this helps. I'd think you'd have a really hard time finding that for such a short time. You can get a more modest 2 bedroom though for three months in a nice neighborhood.. Above all else, if you are not psychologically immune to it, be sure and check the place out at 12 midnight. You throw all that money down and then discover its surrounded by a choir of barking dogs and crowing roosters all night long. They won't give you your money back and there will be nothing the police or offending neighbours will do about it. I also got robbed in Piapi when my landlord left my apartment keys lying around for their workers to clean up on all of my possessions.... amongst other coincidental rip offs they treated me to and claimed to be innocent of. The point being is go out and, ON YOUR OWN, buy some new locks for your doors and give the keys to no one....not even your landlord. Some landlords even offer a nice solid jail cell type gate that closes over your door and accomodates a nice fat pad lock. That's the ultimate in peace of mind !! What I'm trying to say in all of this, is when you get some great deal on any rentals, not being able to sleep at night or having your place robbed while you are out suddenly makes it a not-so-good deal. 15,000 P is cheaper than 8,000 if its dog, rooster and thief free. Oh ya....learn how to read an electric meter ( a bit tricky as alternating dials run counter to one another) also if you have to pay for hydro and make sure the meter is sealed...yet another "honest mistake" I was treated to at my first place of residence in DGTE. And that is irregardless of whether the landlord or the utility company is doing the reading and calculations. In my case the utility meter reader just happened to misread the right dial by just enough making my bill not rediculously high, to have the amount not jump off the page at me, but not a trivial amount either for the affected parties....about a thousand P in my outgoing reading bill. That mistake would have benefited my landlord on the following months corrected reading and as far as the utility meter reader is concerned..... who knows ? An "honest mistake' ? A little conspiracy between a couple of people ? I don't know but these mistakes happened in such a way and at at such a time that I can't be blamed for believing it was the third theft in three days and coincidently on the day I was leaving the Phils.

Thanks for the advice, Chuck. We'll see what comes up.
