Hi, I'm American and from the frozen tundra of the country's Midwest  I've been studying the Philippines for the last eight months with an eye towards retiring in a few more years here, a bit early (57), on a modest pension. I figure better to have more freedom and time than more money. I spent a lot of time in the PR in the early 70's with the US Navy out of Subic. I did manage to visit Manila a few times but aside from that I haven't lived in the PR. I did enjoy the culture and the people but being a serviceman I know that my vision of the people and culture was somewhat myopic. I did enjoy the warm weather, the natural beauty and have always wanted to return someday.
I can easily find plenty of information on the larger cities, tourist areas and night spots, but I'm not all that interested in living or retiring in a large city, being a typical tourist, or indulging in the night life of the big towns on a regular basis. I'm actually looking toward semi-rural with access to the services of the larger towns when needed.
I've been studying the language and culture and it's become apparent that my language aptitude leaves a lot to be desired:( . I'm hoping that armed with some sense of the history and customs of the Filipino people, coupled with their famous hospitality and good will, that I will be able to fit in.
I've a few more years yet before I can make the move but it gives me time to learn more, which is why I join sites like this. Thanks for having me aboard.
    Bill

Bill, welcome on this Dumaguete Forum. It seems that you are preparing very well for your retitement here in the Philippines.
That's a much better situation than in my own case where I decided within some weeks to take a new start in my life and to choose for the Philippines.
I had been there 7 or 8 times as a diving-tourist. Good enough to make the selection. I haven't regretted.
You already selected Dumaguete as your retirement destination ?

I've considered it along with several other locations. I've no pressure right now to make a final decision yet. But it seems a fairly attractive one.

Welcome, and may I suggestyou narrow your search then come visit, check them out, and even explore soom other areas off your list so you can compare.
My experience was that I picked Bohol as a place to go settle. I ended up in Dumaguete quite accidentally, and stayed. Everyone has a different idea of paradise.
