I was wondering if any of you have had encounters with snakes in the Philippines? I know that there is a lot of sea snakes. I was wondering about the ones on land, and not the ones in cages. Have any of you had encounters with then in the wild? I have seen several smashed flat on the road between Dumaguete and Valencia but never encountered a live one in the wild.

Hi Jim,I saw a small Cobra, when out walking in the Mindanao. My wife told me she had killed a large one with a stick when it had reared up at her, when she was a girl.
I read on another forum a guy got a sea snake in his trunks.Fortunately he wasn't bitten but he did suffer from a nasty rash.

We had a snake in the house when we lived in Maayong Tubig...

It got stuck on the fly paper put on the floor to catch mice...

So I got the title Snake Slayer :-)

There are quite a few snakes especially off the beaten path in the barrios. I have lived in Candau-ay for a couple of years when I was just a kid and can remember some snake encounters. Yaiks!!

This is my 14th year in Dumaguete & in all that time, during one of my walks where I live in Candau-ay I saw a large dead snake on the main road, probably hit by a hit-&-run driver.

About three months ago we had a viper in the house. It looked almost identical to a diamondback rattler without the rattle. Through internet searches we determined it to be a species of pit viper. About 4 feet in length.

Interesting, so what did you do with it larry? Pit viper meant to be rare species in the Philippines. This just brought me back to remember walking through thick grass area/wild shrubs, dead branches ,not following any path when in Valencia last time ,i was wearing only flipflops,i forgot to bring my boots, i never even wear it there . The thought of snakes cross my head in an instant because that was midday, but my mind just say go on you silly.I never seriously thought of snakes in Valencia until you mentioned that viper here.

An SU student once caught a snake during a field trip to the forest beyond Camp Lookout. The snake turned out to be a King Cobra.

King Cobra has been sighted along the banks of Maite Creek in Valencia.

Didn't know there were cobras here, interesting. My neighbor has a small reticulated python that he found in the street in Taclobo. That is in the City. He wears it like a bracelet and comes to our store, great conversation piece!
