British man facing seven years in Filipino jail for adultery goes into hiding
Last updated at 00:12am on 4th January 2008

A British man was hiding on a tropical island last night to avoid being jailed for adultery.

David Scott and his Filipina partner Cynthia Villamor are being hunted by authorities in her home country.

Police say Miss Villamor became pregnant with Mr Scott's child before she officially separated from her ex-husband.

Adultery is illegal in the Philippines, where it incurs a jail sentence of at least seven years.

Jailed: David Scott and his girlfriend Cynthia Delfino have been locked up on suspicion of adultery

The couple have already spent several days in a rat-infested prison cell but were released on a technicality.

Mr Scott, 35, who met Miss Villamor on the internet, was advised to return to the UK - but refused to leave without her.

Police are thought to be trying to track the couple down to press charges against Mr Scott.

Theyy they fell in love when he flew over to meet her last year.

Miss Villamor later discovered she was pregnant, and Mr Scott, a plasterer, returned to prepare for the birth next month.

His partner's divorce is not yet finalised. And it is believed her estranged husband Noriel Delfino informed the authorities when he discovered she was pregnant.

Last weekend police officers stormed into Miss Villamor's parents' house in the capital, Manila, and arrested the couple.

They were held in a police cell, but then released because of a mix-up over Mr Scott's name.

Last night he said he was determined to remain with his girlfriend until 'this mess' could be sorted out.

He said officials had recorded his name as John Doe - and so his lawyer was able to argue for the couple's release.

But Mr Scott is convinced police will soon be looking for him again. From his hideout in Manila, he said: "They are trying to get my proper name and will try to arrest me as soon as they do."

He said that Miss Villamor had already been charged with adultery and he expected the same to happen to him if he is caught.

'The solicitor said to me: "You can leave the country now and it is probably the safest thing to do." But if leaving the country means leaving Cynthia and my unborn baby then I'm not going anywhere.

"At the moment we are in hiding. I'm just hoping the embassy or someone can help us out. I just want to bring my family back to England.

"The one thing on my mind and keeping me going is making sure Cynthia and the baby are safe."

He added: "We are in love and she has been separated from her husband for three years."

Mr Scott, from Swindon, met his partner, a supervisor at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Manila, in an online chatroom in the summer of 2006. Her marriage had collapsed the year before.

Last February he travelled to the South-East Asian island to stay with her for two months.

He discovered in June that she was pregnant with his daughter, and returned in October.

But their dream of happiness was soon shattered.

Police have told the couple they are each facing at least seven years in jail.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are aware of the arrest of David Scott and consulate officials have visited him and are providing assistance.

"It seems he was out there with his pregnant Filipina girlfriend but she is still married and under Filipino law that is deemed a crime.

"I don't know the legal term for the charges but it is certainly something to do with adultery."

This is not related to infos of Dumaguete but might have some moral -ethical, cultural implications to many (regardless of race /nationality ) of today who resort to meeting possible partners/bf's-gf's through the internet .

Now, this brit is in trouble for being ignorant of the Filipino laws and culture. He forgot he's not in England. And by the way i bit this woman's marraige wasn't going well (even before this unsuspecting brit arrived ) because of her habitual internet chatting disease (chatting up to males hooking up online ) my guess. So many single & free less complicated women online , but crazy to pursue love interest on a married woman ,courting for trouble .Perhaps, what drew them together was of what they have in common ,both married .What's wrong with some married men, getting dirty in the internet, finding an internet lover abroad .Married and keeing on chatting strangers online is like courting /opening oneself up into temptation, with the main excuse "marraige is on the rocks" .It's even putting less chance to put right any the differences and for the marraige to work if there's this addiction to the internet chat in the way, chatting all these w**kers online (sorry for my french ) , women flashing their boobs, show their pants etc.The reason of love is bull*** how can person say it's love through knowing /meeting in person for 2 wks ,few months, and some think it's love. Some even question after many yrs if it's really love, and they realized it's not.
Is this what you call love is blind ,or love is stupid or rather say the person is stupid to venture into the unknown .There is no divorce law in the Philippines and it's not easy to dissolve marraige .

They're lucky the Filipino husband wasn't crazy they could be hacked by a bolo and that's the end.At least he didn't choose to bottle it up and prepare his own nasty revenge , but was soliciting help from the authorities. In this case,I feel for the husband, than these adulterous pair, sod off ,lock them up (it's only 7 years in jail anyway living with the rats ) ,it will be better lesson serve for adultery and warning don't mess up in foreign country,Philippine jails are filthy. It's not all paradise.

You visit the link and look they got even a lovely photo posted .:p

Just some thoughts for the married ones ,if your hubby/wife doesn't work involving computers or the internet but spends unusual long hours in your computer ,late nights til morning ,it's not just one off it happened but often and continuous change from the usual pattern of behaviour, sometimes can be acting odd ,and saying reasons that hardly fits in , keep an open mind ( but don't act hysterical ,just be normal as possible not creating a stir ), it could be just simple , but could be up to something strange and that you don't like. I am not introducing some paranoia to people ,it's better to be aware or on the look out than leaving oneself too naive , on denial to know.

Sounds about as ridiculous as the British teacher that got in Mohammad/Teddy Bear trouble in Sudan recently.

It's high time Philippine law joined the modern world and stopped living in the dark ages, shackling its people to an oppressive religion.

Hey, but that's just my opinion.

I agree with you PN that the internet is responsible for many marriage breakdowns and the symptoms you describe are spot on. But there was probably a marriage problem in the first place if people with partners are seeking love online. But i do think the internet is a legitimate to meet a partner in the modern world and i know a number of successful relationships that have started online.

Back to the case of David and Cynthia, surely there is nothing wrong with people getting together who are separated from their partners after a relationship break down. I think this is very harsh treatment and a stupid law that should be modernised.

Maybe this explains why the grandad foreigners chase girls in their teens and twenties.....to scared to try for a mature woman in case she has been married.

Thanks PN for the interesting topic which has been discussed at our place over dinner. I have lived in a few countries including 3 years in the Philippines in the 1980's and my wife (from Sibulan) and I have been together for 23 years. I met so many married filipino guys who were "playing up" you couldn't build enough jails to house them all. In talking to my wife, it seems the practical application of this law is mainly against women which is disappointing but not surprising. I wonder hom many politicians would be left if this law was properly policed ?

The reaction of our kids was interesting. They are born and raised in aussie and can't believe how draconian that law is. My 16 year old son defended meeting people on the internet. He met his girlfriend on the net and she only lives 5 kilometres away.

We also laughed at your warning about w@nkers on the net. Our kids are fully aware that the beautiful person they think they're talking to over the net might be some smelly old poofter or pedophile.

    Cheers

Hi Pickled Newt your post is food for thought, both my wife and I read it and my wife wishes to point out that she spent most of today on the computer while doing the Ironing.....watching Benny Hinn!
Do you recall the Pastor from the North West who was murdered in P.I. before Christmas? why did he marry a young Lady almost 40 years his junior? I think he was very naive and the whole story so sad may he R.I.P.....regards john

Benny Hinn is worse than any internet predator. His fraudulent "healing" earns him US$100 million per year and there are many instances of gullible people voluntarily giving him their life savings. He should be in jail.
