Hayahay is a very famous Open Air Restaurant in Dumaguete. The variety of food reaches from fresh sea-food to different local dishes and good Pizza. They have three -. If you wanna use them, better give them a call and make a reservation. The baked Talaba (Oyster) for 120 Peso is a must-try. The beer-prices are around 30 peso and the food has a good value for the price. Pizza is in the range 180 - 260 Peso. All fish and seafood is fresh and you can choose your crabs and lobster from the tank.

Hayahay is also well known for good life music. Wednesday is the day where all Dumaguete Rastafari go to listen to some bands including the local heroes ENCHI. Thursday is acoustic night with Allen who also plays some sets on friday in exchange with a band where i forgot the name. It is the day for smooth jazzy pop. Saturday are some louder tunes around when there is the Rock night.

One thing I recognized at the last visit is that Hayahay seems to charge a kind of foreigner or longnose tax of 4 %. I mentioned it to the waitress and asked what it is and she said government tax. As there are NO 4% government tax in the Philippines I asked again. She blushed (what is very rare in the PI) and walked away. Another waiter came and said I don't have to pay it !?!
Also funny that the day before I was visiting Hayahay and had 3 beer at the bar and paid 90 peso. There was no government or long-nose tax on that. It is also not mentioned anywhere in the menu that there is a government tax ox service charge. ... Or it is just a price-rise for foreigners ???

It is not about the 4 %, I just don't like if guys who eat and drink a lot, get charged extra on top of it. Maybe we should also occupy 2 big tables with 8 people and drink 2 Red Horse grande in 5 hours, but order a bucket of ice each 15 minutes.

Still a great Hang-Out, I will follow up with Sande the manager why, to who and when this 4% are charged and when not...
On the picture you see the bill, with something unreadable 4%. after my complain they crossed it out again and the price went back to "local" price

    cheers

I have experienced similar at Antulang, but there they clearly tell you up front unless you sit next to the kitchen 10% will be added to your bill. more if you go farther away! Perhaps the waitress simply was unable to explain a similar policy for sitting in one of the treehouses?
either way not unheard of here.

the mistake was writing TAX, just noticed that...

actually we were sitting this time just between the small shop and the bar (where I did not get charged 4% the day before).

    Sounds weird

It sounds weird Rhoody. I have been at Hayahay many times and can not remember to have seen anything like this. But admittedly I usually leave it to my fiancee to check the bill, so maybe I just havn`t noticed. But it could sound like, someone just tried to take you for a ride here :D

Anyway, I still think Hayahay is a nice place, and I have never experienced anything but good service from the staff there. Certainly not any tangering with the bill or anything like that. So place still highly recommended from my side.

I usually give at least 4% tip, if we have eaten there, so mayby that is why, I don´t need to pay any "tax" :D

    Best regards, Lars

Long-nose tax haha!! I like that. I think they were trying you on Rhoody. If you didn't complain I wonder who gets to keep the P7.20.

...maybe , the 4% tax was for the broken bottle of San miguel beer ,:D

Seriously , it's nice of you to notice this kind of thing. Now , the long-nose , will become aware, and probably, kind of checking their bill.

    long-nose??

Good day! About the word "long-nose"? I don't think we should always use it. For me, this actually encourages divisions with each one of us. We are all equal and thats how we should start trying to treat each other and should try. Who knows, we might be making a change here for the better. My own personal opinion.

    Sincerely,
    archon_manofsteel

Arch.....I don't think westerners in general have a problem with the word "longnose". That's what we have, certainly compared to the Asian people.
Did you notice MY nose Arch......it's even longer than the average one (and a bit oblique too), but I don't mind.
    But if I had a choise I whould change with your's ! :D

Does 'hayahay' have a meaning to it? I am just picturing some waiter or waitress carrying a hot plate through the restaraunt shouting, "hayahay! Watch out, hot plate!" or a patron exclaiming, "hayahay, wait a minute dont take that beer, I have not finished it yet!" Maybe someone can help me with this.

I heard that "Hayahay" means something like "sweet life", but not sure... your explanation fits also, Tubig...

Archon, I think long-nose is not too bad and most of them smile about...

Fundiver, now I understand your nickname.... another funny statement: "I have not seen anything like that.... but i never checked" ??? HELLO??? ...and 4% tip KURIPOD !!!

but also what you say is typical for us long noses. They tell us a price and we pay, sounds cheap anyway....
Hayahay just started this year with this policy. Several DI members were there and experienced the same. One day I was there with Yabs and his Dad. The older members here know him, Hayahay can be happy that he had no online connection during his stay in Duma. I can't wait until he see this post and donates one of his famous comments...

    cheers
