Thank you for the heads up - this is certainly different from the U.S.

I should have used other wording. By "stealing" I did not mean soliciting. Simply offering a more attractive job at better pay through the appropriate channels (bestjobs.ph etc). It's up to the people to make the switch. I simply meant that it would be much more convenient to hire employees that have solid experience with similar jobs.

Would that get us in trouble? I am aware of TeleTech's exclusivity in Dumaguete and would set up outside the city.

    RHB,
As we all know, even the biggest international corporations need to meet legal local shareholder quota (except for a very, very few exceptions, I am told). This means, yes, there are local interests looking out for Teletech.

    Bjorn,
I suppose a big @ss full-page ad in local newspaper would not be problematic, as compared to asking some "recruiters" to talk to potential candidates. Yeah, the system here really, really sucks for foreigners.

Teletech exclusivity? For call-center business in Dumaguete? Man, how idiotic is that. Hope that's not forever.

Too bad for you. Dumaguete is at least 10times better than Bacolod in terms of place to live.

I don't think it would be difficult to poach experienced staff from cebu or manila to live in a nice place like dumaguete.

If you get really desperate you could emply some long nose white @ss expats but you would need strict rules about drinking on the job and straying onto the dumaguete info forum.

    Are you sure about that?
I noticed that expats consider places like Dumaguete and other provinces hands-down preferred places to live relative to Manila.
But when I ask provincial locals, they all seem to prefer Manila. Even those locals in Manila would not consider living in province.
I am sure there may be exceptions, but I just can't imagine it being easy to lure the snobby, high-earning call center hot-shots in Manila to Dumaguete.
For me I don't like Manila, and am considering a move to Dumaguete or Palawan, hopefully soon.

    Stay out of trouble

This is very good advice in my opinion. In general a poor country like the Philippines is not ruled by law but by its richest citizens and for the sole sake of their personal interests. If you mess with the interests of some of these people, one way or another, you are asking for serious trouble. And do not beleive for one second, that the laws of the country will protect you in any way. They will not.

    City / province

I think you are right about that. I sence also, that the attitude of the high-earning people in Manila is, that Manila is the only civilized and modern part of the country. Which to some extend is true also, to be honest. Just compare the efficiency of the staff in the immigration at NAIA with anything you see in Dumaguete.

While many expats, including myself, find the easy-going way of life in Dumaguete charming (although sometimes annoying as well), to most educated philippinos it is just rural in the negative meaning of this word.

Thinking about it, this is hardly any different from how well educated people in developed countries think about the countryside. Most would rather loose an arm than move away from the big city, where they were educated.

Dumaguete is ten times better? LOL, it must be heaven then. I admit there's advantages to both cities...but I don't see a huge difference between them. Dumaguete has a slightly slower relaxed atmosphere (not to say any expat died of stress in Bacolod), nice adjacent countryside and good beaches nearby. But those are the only advantages that I know of....Are there any others?

It was a figure of speech. The 10x thing.
I think my perception of Bacolod was shaped by Goldenfields (?) area where it reminded me of Angeles. And street obviously under-aged pok poks. I am not a fan of either.

So it's not that Dumaguete is so much better than Bacolod; it's more that I don't like Bacolod.

So why where you in Golden fields then?, and how do you know they have underage prostitutes one might ask? And you hang out in Angeles too? Seems like one protests too much...

There are many nice resorts and residential areas in and near Bacolod. There is 10x the money in Bacolod, so a bussiness venture there might be prudent.

Why does it seem you always need two posts to explain what you really mean?
