Can anyone give me their thoughts on Thalatta Resort and Kookoos Resort?
I've looked at their websites and they both seem pretty nice places.
    Thalatta seems quite expensive though...
What I'm wondering is, are there local places to eat/drink near to the resorts or, once you're there, have they got you as a captive audience?

    Hi,
Thalatta is definitely at the top-end of the Dumaguete-Resort-price scale. It is a nice place and runs a professional dive-operation.
Kookoos Resort is also nice and cheaper.

Both resorts are a kind of in the middle of nowhere (Kookoos- even at the end of that...)

There is not a lot to do in the surrounding areas (I cant say nothing, cause listening to the Ocean at night is great). It is quite a distance to Dumaguete City, but it is depending on what you want. Transfers are available either public (until a certain time of the day) or booked via the resort.
Coming back from Duma is no Problem to Thalatta (200 Peso with a trike), Kookoos might be more difficult. Just post what you are looking for and we can give you more ideas.

    cheers

    Rhoody

Steve, yes Coocoos nest is quite remote. That actually is its charm.
It has a nice and quite beach and is very affordable. The restaurant is surprisingly well. I did not expect that for such a small scale resort. Owners are very friendly people.
It's difficult however to suddenly change your choise of location to dinner because of the remote place.
Thalatta (my neighbours) is a class higher and less remote.
The restaurant is without hesitation to be called "good". You can go to other places to have dinner.
Some resorts are quite nearby Thalatta and are easy to 'catch' via the highway which connects all these resorts.
    Malatapay: at 200 meter
    Well beach: at 2,5 km
    Bahura: at 4,5 km
El dorado, Pura Vida, Private Residence,Atlantis (all in Dauin): at around 8 to 9 km
El Dorado has a real good kitchen and good choises (not only my own perception !).

    I agree with Jelly,
one thing to think about is if you go from Thalatta to the resorts mentioned above you always catch a reide (before 8 pm) going there, but might have big problems of going back if you dont have your ride.

    cheers

Kookoos Nest vs. Thalatta vs. resorts in Dauin

These two resorts are very different and made for different groups of customers. Kookoos Nest is a place mainly for young backpackers looking for a beach hideaway. Getting to Kookoos Nest requires travelling 10 km on a mostly unpaved road from the national highway, so you don´t just go out from the resort and take a bus or jeepney anywhere.

Thalatta on the other hand is a resort for divers and for people wanting more luxury, and is very comparable to the similar diveresorts in Dauin (Amontillado, Atlantis, El Dorado and Pura Vida). The main difference is, that Thalatta is further away from Dumaguete than the other four, but it is still close to the national highway. Moreover, trafic is very light south of Dauin, so in reality it does not take that much time to cover the extra distance with a bus or jeepney.

Going home to Thalatta with a tricycle after an evening in Dumaguete might get a bit tiring though, since Dauin is already a long trip to make onboard such a vehicle, and particularly if its late at night and your eyes are heavy already. Therefore the resorts in Dauin (or hotels in Dumaguete) are a better choise, if you like a bit of nightlife as part of your vacation in Negros Oriental and don`t have your own transport.

Thanks for all the info guys.
My plan is a few days in Dumaguete (with a trip to Bayawan to see the in laws), but thought I'd surprise the mrs with couple of nights in a quiet location  So, either Kookoos or Thalatta could fit the bill...

    MrSteve,
I am sure Jellyfish will follow up, but at Thalatta was some construction going on in Dec-Jan, I don't know if it is finished (just because you mentioned quiet place). Another alternative in this area might be WellBeach Resort, small, modern reasonable priced too. distance to Dumaguete the same.
    Have a look here: WellBeach

    cheers
