    Hi all,

I am a new member and very pleased with this forum. A lot of info and seems a lot has changed since We were there in 2000.

I will be retiring in about four weeks and my filippina wife and 8 year old son are going to move to Dumaguete in about June.

1st. More of a statement than a question. I am planning to buy a container to ship our personal effects including possibly my boat. Has anyone done this and does anyone know about customs.

2nd. Does anyone know if there are any private planes still sitting at the northwest end of the airport or if there is any rental airpalnes there?

    I'll have more questions later

    Thanks in advance Sky6king

the small cherokees and tomahawks are owned by the flight school and are not for rent as far as I know. you can arrange a ride perhaps, but from your name I assume you are a pilot? I know a few guys who have indeed shipped containers here, One is on the forum and perhaps will respond.

    Thanks Guys

Yes I am a pilot. I have been flying the PI on my flight sim and it seems like any where in the PI is within reach or range of a small plane, not that I could afford to fly that often on my retirement. I'll be looking forward to hearing about the container though.

You will not use a container if your boat is too big. It will go "break bulk" on the ship or vessel. How big is your boat?

If you are sending a container from the States, I suggest that you consider sending this through a balikbayan company. They will send your household goods at a reasonable price and you will most likely not have to hassle with the customs people. If you send your container through the vessel company by yourself, you will have to deal with the customs people and this will be a nightmare!

    Thanks tubigboy,

My boat is only 16 foot long and the measurement seems like it would fit inside a container. We have a balikbayan company here in houston Forex. I'll check it out.

What's your status & that of your wife regarding Philippines visa. This is an important consideration as having the wrong one will run you 30% import duty on your household goods.

Er, please add the 12% value added tax on top of that!

    NOT funny.

I believe that the width of 20' and 40' and 45' containers is 8'. I am not positive on this. Measure your boat and go measure a container. You will probably have to pay big money to get your boat to go through customs. I suggest that you think about selling it and buying something over here.

check with the Balikbayan people regarding the customs too. You might have to put your household goods in her name.

    boat and personal belongings

For my part the status of my wife is a little muddy. She has been here for 8 years and just last year received her green card. Wounder why they call it green, hers is white, anyway I assume that since she is not an american citizen yet and has a philippine passport she must still be a philippine citizen.
When we were there last in 2000 Immigration in Manila gave myself and my son a balikbyan stamp in out passports that was good for one year. I have looked @ the 13a visa but looks like to much baloney so I am going to stick with te balikbyan stamp for now.
tubigboy, you are probably right about customs and the boat, however when I try to buy a boat off the locals and they see I am an American, well you know the rest.
