    Hi eddtango,
welcome to Dumagueteinfo. there are many great places around for a first snorkling expierience. There is no need to go into a resort for some snorkling, unless you also need a place to stay.
If that is the case, you might wanna go to a resort in the Dauin arean south of Dumaguete. If you wanna stay in Duma, drop me a line, I can organise or go with you on a great snorkel-trip.
    just drop a line.

    cheers

    Rhoody

Depending on your budget, there are many options. How many people are you, do you have Kids? You wanna stay closer to Dumaguete or just somewhere? you might wanna have a look at Wellbeach a bit outside, but close to the boats to Apo and the Malatapay Market.

If you wanna spend some more, there are plenty of places in Dauin.

    cheers

The whole family can mean a lot here, from 4 people to way over 70... hehe so you need to book a whole resort if you bring a whole philippino family.

Some people say that the sanctuary in Dauin is better snorkeling than Apo Island, I would not say better, but at least equal.
There are wonderful coral-formations and marine life to observe and it is a very shallow reef, so the snorkeler is very close to the marine life. The bay is a kind of protected, so the surface conditions are better for snorkeling at present.

    cheers

    Hotel

We're probably going to be 6-7 people. Does the sanctuary have a website? What kind of cottages or hotel rooms do they have?

Mantalip reef in Bindoy is good for snorkeling, Its a 15 hectare sanctuary. It is not a resort though but maybe cottages at the beach. Sleepover I think is not possible. With permission from he locals there, you can rent a boat or banca to the sanctuary, where a cement cottage (observation point for Bantay dagat) is standing. From there you can enjoy snorkeling in the shallow reef. They prefer high tide in going there so you will not be standing over the corals. I got this information from the Provincial Tourism Office.
