That's country life Jim, you didn't mention also being surrounded by ignorant yokels, we are seriously thinking of moving back into the city where it's (slightly) more civilised.
I cannot see how a move to the city would be any improvement to your quality of life there, in fact you would just be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire in my view? That is where Cabb has his house perhaps you could become neighbours with him and share this great experience together? I can just imagine the two of you sitting together having a Beer on the Veranda, scowling away like the two old grumpy BarStewards from the Muppets. There is just no way to avoid noise pollution there in PH it is everywhere, Hoots Mon! Yer Doomed a tell ye jist Fecking Doomed.
The time has come the Walrus said to speak of many things... Of Roosters, pigs and hens, and all the Yokelling Once you found, your great escape from the daily grudge and grime, you lelt old Englands shores, away from immigrants and crime The grass for you was greener then, in the land of sun and smiles Now wishing for the city life, along with all its trial's
I must be the luckiest guy in Dumaguete, living in a subdivision that I often compare to an oasis of quiet with no streetdogs, no neighbours with loud dogs either, no roosters nearby, no pigs or chicken farm, main road just far enough away that we only hear the occasional big bike with a rider that wants his presence to be known far and wide. Of course there is the occasional karaoke party, but even those are rather modest in both duration and volume. Anyone interested to buy a place here, there's currently several houses for sale here (not very cheap though). The one below is not for sale.
Whilst I do agree with much of what you say here, it is my opinion that there will be little of any change there in the Philippines for many decades to come and even within this century, this third world country is just so backward like most other third world countries within the 0 to 25 degrees of latitude north of the Equator. The most advanced intelligent nations are around 50 to 60 degrees north of the equator where to survive the winters we had to plan for it. A prime example of this is Scotland with a latitude of 56 degrees it has only a very short growing season being a small land mass surrounded by the sea on three sides and the marauding Fecking English to the south, however this small populated area was to prevail in spite of the odds against us, The University's of both Edinburgh and Glasgow were more advanced than anywhere else in the world especially in the Medical Sciences, the English had to send Charles Darwin up to Edinburgh to finish his education when he become too advanced for the Education system down south. I'm beginning to wonder if it may be possible that much of the population there in the Philippines are born stupid especially amongst the working classes with their poor low protein diet lacking the essential nutrients required for brain development and that this may even take place before they have been born? For a time I lived in a rental next door to a family community which numbered 22 persons having 3 couples of breeding age they soon increased in numbers, there was only one toilet at their place, they also had no electric until I gave this to them, a few times in the year they would have a lavish Birthday Party for one of the children with no expense spared on this. Some time later I was to employ 3 of the young adult males to assist me on my house build, they would get their pay on a Saturday and on the Monday they would ask for an advance until pay day, I was to find out later that the majority of their pay was used up paying the loan for their Motorbikes and other loans which they had to finance the Birthday parties, often their diet would be 100% white rice with a mixture of Soy Sauce and vegetable Oil for added flavour and only occasionally they would have some of the cheapest smallest Fish on the side. They were not bad people very honest and never did steal even a handful of nails from our site. But they were all more stupid than anyone could ever imagine, next to our site was another new build taking place this being done in CHB where it is normal to have a team of a dozen or so, at times my neighbour and I would share workers, of the dozen he had and the three I was using there was not even one that could be trusted to do well at his Trade, initially my neighbour was to keep accurate details of his costs and 3 months into his build he was to tell me that mistakes on his site had cost him well over P100K and extended the job by weeks, he was promised by his builder for the work to be done in 90 days but the actual time taken was a full 9 months, that particular house has now lain empty this last 3yrs.
