Interesting topic. I don't know anyone that has packed up and moved to PI with "older" children. Most kids of expats are born and raised there. Children born into nearly any situation don't know anything different and live happy, carefree lives as long as the family is loving and provides their basic needs. I can only imagine the complete rebellion of a teenager from a Western country being forced to give up everything they are accustomed to and switching to a slow, simple life. However, I don't know anyone that's done that and until someone that has posts here all is speculation. One speculation is that it depends on the mental disposition of the child. There may be that rare individual that would accept a change from Western culture to something simpler. As for eduation, what about home schooling until they are ready for high school or university?

I just remembered that 2blackbelts is in the process of moving his wife and daughter from America to Duma. I hope he is willing to share the experience with the rest of us.

PhilT, I agree with you with the social system and all that things in "our" home-countries, but that was not your topic.
It was not if "all" benefit from your taxes and who made what after WW II...

You asked if it is possible to get good education for kids and health care for the family and the answer is YES.

Timn8ter, you got a good point with the teenagers. I know more than a few guys working for international companies in SE Asia. Mostly they have contracts and assignments for 12 or 24 month in different capitals (Manila, HK, Macao...) and moving on to other cities or countries. The development of their Kids (whatever age they are) is amazing to watch. Their school education-level is the same like in our western countries and in many aspects they are way more open to the world than comparable teenagers in our countries.
That might not work if somebody moves to Zamboanguita and send the kids to the national high-school there but again PhilT's topic was if proper education and health-care is possible and again, the answer is a clear YES.

Moving with Kids to another country, culture and continent brings for sure many problems with it but also offers many opportunities. Globalization
    means flexibility and adjustment.
If somebody is happy in the environment he/she lives, hey no problem, that is good cause he/she is happy. If somebody wants to try something new, do it, we only live once (at least most of us). Kids and teenagers adjust way faster than we "old farts"....

    cheers

I agree Rhoody. My kids grew up in the Middle East, U.S., and Oz (plus vacations in the Philippines) and the travel and experiences they had were an obvious bonus. They're all doing very well as young adults.

There is at least one outstanding international-type school in Cebu. I ran into a German on Bohol a couple years ago sending his son to one, and home on weekends on the ferry. I believe the boy stayed with a relative on Cebu during school times. I did a quick web search and found one, again - for a price - and it does cost about $7000 USD a year for tuition etc. Can be done....

    Living in...

Our new house is coming along very well, (no comments on this subject please) and should be done in about six month. I just signed a new consulting contract, so it may be a couple of years before we get over there permanently.

My daughter by then will have graduated from high school. She wants to move to Japan and work in the TV industry. She should be fluent in Japanese by then, as she is fluent in French now.

It looks like it will just be my wife and I, some animals, and a motorcycle or two making the trip. After being there a few months, I'll start the fitness center.

Sounds to me like a wonderfully unique way to grow up that should lead to a world of opportunities, but then, I drive on the right.
