In spite of all the talk about the MILF (no jokes please) there are a number of expats in Davao that are very pleased with their choice.
If I got kicked out of Bacolod and Dumaguete wasn't an option....yes, it would be Bohol for me...Guimaras (otherwise known as Guimares) would be a very strong contender too. In fact...that island is screaming for someone to set up a decent dive resort...none there that I know of.... Romblon...interesting...never been there but I've heard a few good reports...
Timn8ter, I know a few of expats there too and they love it. I've spent a fair amount of time there too and I loved it! That's until i found Dumaguete of course...but if I had to leave Dumaguete it would be straight to Davao for me. Southerndon
Right now there's a travel advisory for foreigners going to Davao due to Abu Sayyaf threats of kidnapping foreign nationals.
I think that is existing since 15 years or so and got refreshed periodicly... sometimes its a region sometimes its the PI, depending from which country it comes. There is one about Berlin/Germany: Don't visit "Kreuzberg" at night. Guests might be safer if they follow the advice and others are still in good health even they did not follow it. cheers Rhoody
Rhoody is correct. That warnings has been around for a long long time...they just renew it annually, in my opinion, to cover their @ss. It seems to be a conditioned response to bring up the State Department warning whenever Davao and Mindanao is mentioned. It's almost comical. I was in Davao and Sultan Kudarat on 2005 I traveled to Davao constantly with my GF. And I never felt safer. I realize the problems and dangers of Mindanao and if I can be frank they are no different than any other problems of the Philippines... Negros and Dumaguete included! I felt safe in Davao, Sultan Kudarat, all of my travels in Mindanao, and of course Negros and Dumaguete. Southerndon
