Jimmy Carter’s involvement with Habitat For Humanity International (HFHI) began in 1984 when the former president of the United States led a work group to New York City to help renovate a six-story building with 19 families in need of decent affordable shelter. That experience planted the seed, and the Jimmy Carter Work Project has been an internationally recognized event of HFHI ever since.

The theme for the 1999 JCWP, Magbayanihan Tayo, ("Let Us Build Together") had both biblical and Filipino cultural roots, where an entire village helps roof a neighbor's house or move the house to another location. The project constructed a total of 293 houses in Bacolod City, General Santos City, Maragondon, Paranaque, Tagbilaran and in Dumaguete City.

Here are some pictures taken today from the habitats I, II & III in Bajumpandan, and the habitat in Upper Cantil-e.

And here are the last batch of pictures of the habitats. Everyone I met was very nice and glad to see me visit the community. It is not everyday that a foreigner comes into the habitat and they welcome you with open arms, a drink even to join in on a basketball game. If you ever have time, please visit our neighbors in the habitat, you will be happy you did.

It is located north of downtown Dumaguete. They have festival celebrations just like all the other Barangays.
