This year's YES camp is currently at the Foundation University from April 28 to May 2. Main objective of this event is to help the youth become aware of climate change, global warming, and other vital environmental concerns. Last night was a welcome performance but officially, the event started today. I think more than 2,000 students, teachers, coaches, supervisors from different public and private elementary and secondary schools nationwide are participating in this camp. Expected activities will include field exposures, environmental film showings, plenary sessions, workshops, contests on essay writing, slogan making, quiz, spelling bee, on the spot poster making, YES-O exhibits, YES-O spotlight, SAYAWIT sa Kalikasan, Search for the Lakambini and Lakan ng Kalikasan, and munting Bayani ng Kalikasan Awards. and by the way, DepED Center for Students and Co-curricular Affairs (CSCA) Youth Spokesperson Sam Concepcion will grace April 30 (Wed) Search for the Lakambini at Lakan ng Kalikasan at Sofia Soler Sinco Hall.....I promised my daughter i will take photos of him............

The participants are divided into 6 groups for the field exposures:
    Group 1& 3 - PNOC Geothermal Plant
Group 2 - Twin Lakes Balinsayao and Danao
    Group 4 - Casaroro Falls
Group 5 & 6 - Banica River and Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences
    I belong to group 5.....

I think Dumaguete City is indeed the perfect place for this Summer Camp with the beautiful natural sceneries, clean surroundings, gentle people around, and especially the erratic climatic condition (intermittently raining and then hot sunny weather) which perfectly can be attributed to climate change.

Other YES camps were held 4 in Baguio City and 1 in Iloilo City...

I will try to upload photos here once I am back home...

Initial feedbacks re: 6th YES Camp

jocelyn ibasco and cissel sanchez : "the venue is amazing, people are warm and accommodating, but the organizers are not properly coordinated with each other. Over-all, the 6th YES camp has successfully raised a level of awareness of the causes and impacts of climate change and what we can do to combat this kind of problem."

judy ann and weng : if we were to rate this camp we will say: "VERY POOR".

a teacher from SAMAR: "if the secretariat cannot provide hand-outs of the lectures and presentations during the plenary sessions, this camp will end up as the 'WORST YES CAMP ever...." as teachers, we would like to re-echo what we learned here when we go back to our provinces........ the topics are very timely and significant, the lecturers are experts in their field, like Dr. Angel C. Alcala, but almost all video presentations are not clear, sound system is not great......... the secretariat must at least provide the participants the needed IEC materials, like a CD of the presentations and the hand-outs.....We squeezed a lot of money from our school budget to participate in this camp, imagine, registration fee costs each one of us...... P4,200.00......the organizers should make sure we are given what is due to us............."

an aunt who accompanied her nephew to join the contests - "DISASTER !!! from the very beginning, accommodations were not properly arranged. We were at lost where we should be staying for the whole week..... I heard a pregnant participant sharing a small room with 11 more roommates.........she must have been such an environmentalist to tolerate such a situation to survive the camp
... but later she was transferred to better room, thanks to the manager of the hotel....."

    Al Zahir, a high-school student
: " Excited ako kasi nandoon si Sam Concepcion... I wanted to see him perform LIVE. He speaks a lot of sense, and he cares for the environment. If only all the youth share his attitude and spread the advocacy we can make a difference ........Sam rocks!!!"

I was talking to some participants... they were all saying that it was an organisational desaster and called it more or less a lost change to achieve something together...

    Very sad to hear that.

hi there, lofty.... what i know about the YES camp this is not only for the young people of visayas, it is a NATIONAL event, participants are coming from the regions of the main islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The organizers are Department of Education (DepED), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and KASAMA (Kabataang Sama-samang Maglilingkod, Inc.) yeah, the camp has indeed a noble vision warming up the Youth for Global Environmental Activism..
