I thought that I read somewhere that the Philippines used to be a big exporter of rice, sugar, etc. What the hell happened?

    Relax

relax take a deep breath. There is no shortage of rice in the US. The bulk stores limited the sale of 80lb bags of rice only. If you want 5,10, 25, 50 lb bags. Back up the truck you can buy as many as you want. The local supermarket shelves are well stocked. The area Oriental markets will sell you as much as you want.
I did notice the beer stocks were a bit low. It seems with the farmers making big :greedy:$$ planting corn for ethanol that the hops and barley crops have suffered. You must stock up on large stores of beer. I forsee it being more valuable than gold.

Good! Sugar is much more efficient than corn for ethanol and there has been a study recently that high fructose corn syrup can lead to diabetes too. Unlike sugar. I am referring to the fact that most soda and drinks are made with high fructose corn syrup and not sugar in the U.S. In the Philippines, I have noticed that Coca-Cola uses sugar. I am not sure about other drinks in the Philippines.

I also heard that because of the rising cost of corn, the Coca-Colas and Pepsi drink companies are now considering to go back to using sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

Back to the topic, I know rice is used for beers that are made in Japan but, I did not know that corn is used to make beer too.

Corn is not used for making beer, main ingredients are malted barley, hops,
yeast for fermentation and last but not least water .

Well, the rice crisis is probably allready on the return stadium. It was speculation driven by weakening USdollar. Basically all raw materials are influented.but I dont think rice ever will be as cheap as it was. It somewhat get accept for a new price level.

I don't know about here, but in the U.S. much of the lousy beer budwieser, miller and others is made using rice as amain component.
