hi guys, it's me again, the yes camp is a great opportunity to create awareness on the ill effects of climate changem, its causes and effects. considering that this is an event intended to target the youth, if given the chance to speak before them, what would you say, or what message would you like to tell them????

If i were to speak before the youth about climate change - i will say that it is real. AND it doesn't only mean global warming but global cooling as well. it is caused by natural and human-induced activities. its been with us for several thousands of years, it has changed our planet's landforms...but it is only in our generation that is has been so magnified and fast occurring.and this is scarier........common agreement of climatologists is that the main driver of global climate change is the increased carbon dioxide concentration in our earth's atmosphere resulting from burning fossil fuels we need to power our energy that we use in our daily activities. impacts of climate change include melting up of polar ice caps resulting to sea level rises, seawater intrusion into land, endangering our freshwaters (just like what is happening in cebu city right now....), warming of oceans affecting our fishes, decreasing pH of oceans resulting in acidity and decreased calcification in marine organisms & decreased secondary production affecting our beautiful coral reefs, shellfishes, etc., droughts, increased vector-borne diseases like malaria, etc.... what can the youth do about climate change? reduce our dependencies to electric-powered appliances, walk or bike if you can, practice ecological solid waste management, practice the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle..and the other R - remind others to do it as well... spread the word about it), do not burn your garbage......plant trees...trees are our friends they absorb CO2.... there are other lots of things the youth can do.. and even a small thing like pulling out the celfoncharger from the socket after charging your celfons can already make a difference........ "Are you HOT? ...it is global warming...LET'S ALL DO SOMETHING...."

    Hannah,

Very well said. They need a speaker like you to clarify and emphasis these type of issues.

thanks... i was really hopeful i would learn a lot from this YES camp and that when i get back home i could re-echo what learning experiences i got from the camp....

.. here are some photos i took when we created a mini traffic in the li'l city of Dumaguete during our Youth's March for the Environment. This was led by a great speaker and emcee - Mr. Al Ian Barcelona.... It was great tho' tiring of course, but it was fun raising an awareness of what youth can do.............

Hanna has some good points. I would not talk a lot about global warming, but being focused what each individual can do to protect the environment. Emphasizing a responsible interaction with the environment, not raping it.

    cheers

.... i would suggest the young ones to watch Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, a powerful DVD movie depicting what climate change is, its causes and impacts and what actions everyone can do.................

An inconvenient truth was just on HBO several times in conjunction with the Earth Day celebration, it included an append video covering what has happened since 2005 when it was first released. Check the listings maybe it will air again as they seem to repeat all the stupid movies forever... maybe this one will benefit from same.

hannah, good observations. The problem as i see it, is the most powerful nations in the world in the way of carbon emitters China and the U.S. have the most to do to clean up carbon emissions. Unfortunatly they seem reluctant to effect real change.
The Philippines is on the cusp, and real change can be achieved here on a couple of fronts. Reforrestation and watershed management are in my opinion the two biggies.

One can cry about coral reef management, but unfortunately as the ocean temps rise, coral reefs will die, and there is little that can be done locally to stop that. Yes you can micro manage access, battery waste control, to limit lcalized damage to the reefs, but the latest studies indicate ocean temps will be the big factor in reef survival long term, and that is out of the hands of local resources.

Under the umbrella of watershed management will fall resource management including mining operations, diverting of rivers (common here), oil exploration, and commercial developement,(yes, Malls)

It would be my advice to young folks to focus on what you can change today and tommorrow for the good of the most people, not vested interests.

Nice speech Hannah. You are right this small things if we have to cooperate is a help , recycle etc…don’t burn garbage but the mean worry is how to lessen the carbon dioxide emission from millions of vehicles running every second there in Philippines . There is no strict regulations impose to the vehicles there to measure the percentage of carbon dioxide emission they produce in every second , making a way how to lessen it and also can be included the inspection if the cars can still be allowed to run in the street without losing the break(this is out of topic) . I hope government there strictly control also the factories chimneys emitting also this harmful carbon dioxide, before imposing law to our neighbour to stop burning their trash that they are burning once a week or once a month.. Waste desposal from hospitals and some big establishments mostly they are not properly manage. The government is even allowing investors in some wide forest area, to cut down all the trees, so that they can put their businesses there. Then after that, telling the people to go on tree planting.Nice………

We can do something individually, but the mean problem will also be properly look and manage by the government supposed to be.
