The United States sending the carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its support ships to help the Filipino people harmed by Typhoon Frank.

The group consists of the carrier, a cruiser, three destroyers and a frigate.

When reading this the following came up into my mind.
I appreciate the given support. I surely do, don't get me wrong, Logic.
It's a good thing to offer and give help in this situation.
But ............. I wondered what three destroyers can do.
I know of course, but it looked quite strange reading it.

The destroyers must travel with the carrier to protect it.

    Carrier battle group to PI

Ships typically move in a battle group and offer a wide range of support, medical, logistics and equipment that could be useful in specific disaster situations. A carrier never travels alone and for its protection has destroyers as well as ships that provide support to the carrier. A better choice would have been a the US Marine MAGTF (Marine Amphious Group Task Force) but it was probably just returned to Japan after steaming back and forth to Myramar after their typhoon, (which they were denied access to the country and never assisted. It probably was not ready to respond to this disaster thus, a Battle Group was dispatched. It comes with a full compliment of helicopters, small boats and medical facilities as well as high capacity to carry food, shelters and medical supplies which can be delivered anywhere ashore as requested by the Filipino government, AFP or Red Cross. Additionally, a Battle Group has the ability to house displaced persons if needed and transport them out of the disaster area on rare occassions.

sorry.... lol.... just thought i'd offer some insight.

The Battle Group was probably the closest US ships to the Philippines and since GMA is in Washington and requested immediate assistance, it was diverted into Filipino waters.
