iunderstand- i guess it is wrong to keep building concrete monstrosities but to me it is a hassle to go to market and food store also. I lived in Davao and there are many fine food stores there so a person can shop in 1 place for fresh fruits and veggies and all other needs and i liked it but then this is Dumaguete and there are alot of things i like here- mainly that there are NO TAXIS!!! and alot of green spaces

many people like dumaguete for its rural ambience
a rare thing in a large city
but add malls and things that make dumaguete nice will dissapear

 

Craig, the No-Taxi time in Duma is over since a few month, At the moment there are only 5 Taxi, but I guess it will not stop with that.

Yabster, I am not that sure that we talk about the same city. I am Happy to go for a walk with you through the heart of Dumaguete and we look at all the "rural" ambiance you are talking about...

Buildings like below are growing everywhere in the town-center (even in Looc) . I rather have a mall at the south-end than this wonderful buildings (planted by local architects and businessmen) everywhere in Dumaguete...

Did Robinsons acquire the lot adjacent to its lot near the highway. They have now cleared the area. If it did, then the land area of Robinsons would be now bigger...

Yes i think so. There used to be an auto/vulcanizing shop operating in that area. I passed there this week and the shop's empty.

 

Progress in Dumaguete

It is interesting to see that several members in this forum complain about NOT having fast internet, stable electricity, city by-passes, frozen food stores and other commodities naturally expected in a modern city - to the extent that they consider moving to a "better developed area", while they frown at the simple fact that Dumaguete is a prospering little city, with new, colorful buildings replacing the old brown and black sheds on each corner. I say we can't have one without the other. A Robinson mall would come anyway, and there will be traffic leading to it and from it wherever it was located.
The filipinos are (still) the largest population in the Dumaguete area and I am sure they are ALL happy about the city making progress. Considering the large number of students graduating from high schools and universities every year would it not be great if they can stay and help the local community grow rather than "draining" off to the metros or even abroad?
Let us welcome the IT-based new industries giving work to hundreds if not thousands of young filipinos, spending their salaries locally, generating new services and business offsprings that we, the expats, can enjoy too.
It could have been more air and water polluting industrial giants on prime resort land...
If we don't like progress there are still remote areas along the Negros coastline enjoying peace and harmony and no cell phone signal, no internet, erratic electricity and dusty roads. The lots are still cheap there, until we move there and start pushing prices up...

I don't think the reason is the sinking ground. I think the engineers are not good enough for that project. Think of the Cebu city. Imagine; the city is floating by the sea.. but why is it that big buildings can be constructed there? Come to think of it.
