My husband and I share the same situation. My dad-in-law is in his late 8o's and suffering illness compications and as hubby is the only child, it's our obligation to look after his welfare and be there when he needs us. But have already made plans to retire in Dumaguete in the near future.

 

Well on my fathers side they usualy pass away early...but my father is hanging on even with multiple heart attacks which he now got a heart starter operated in, in case it happens again + prostata cancer which he is taking medication for. And so far he have lived 20 more years then his siblings who died age 55 and 60.

On mothers side (healthy farmers) we have to "help":p them get off, they live to be 95+ even my mother use to say that with a warning finger and a smile hehe

But I am now quite determined that I will retire ASAP given previous conditions.

When I go home to the cold country for 2-4 months every year, I can work and make $ 15 000.- before I have to pay tax in todays numbers and If I make more the tax will only be 17% on the money above.

So I am thinking...why not live and enjoy it when I can and at younger age where I can do more. Instead of beeing here with rain and that darn white stuff that comes in winter...get a tan, work out, play golf and who knows, I may even do some diving if people can convince me that sharks wont bite me :D

All this if I dont get on with my patents, if I do then it will happen later in Duma unless I get some good deal down there which would make it happen earlier.

The first and most obvious requirement is to find that right Dumagueteoise to "daggit" you so that you will be in the position of having a reason to marry.

The "Certificate of Capacity to Marry" is fairly straight forward. It is a bureaucratic imposition of the Philippine Government on foreign embassies requiring them to do the administrative dirty-work for them. The individual proposing to be married to a Philippines national produces an original Birth Certificate and, if ever previously married, an original Death Certificate or Certificate of Divorce of/from the previous spouse. The embassy (or in the case of those living in the Visayas where the service is easily obtained at the Canadian Consulate in Cebu) certifies that all is in order and collects your (currently) 2090 pesos, You are on our way!

WHOA! This is where the fun only begins. Getting the old marriage licence at city hall is NOT in, fill out a form and hand over your twenty bucks - done and out again, all in fifteen minutes.

My education only started last Friday. Give yourself at least three weeks and appear with more patience (much more patience) than I did. I really lost it and the day was only salvaged by my fiancee. Anne once again proved her mettle and I belittled myself by acting foolishly.

Yes, there is a form to fill - and a long questionnaire about marriage and your attitude towards it. I managed to weasel my way out of that one as I considered the questions too personal. You might not object, as I did, but be forewarned that they are coming. You will be expected to attend a day long marriage counselling session. You pay a tuition fee for this course of instruction, naturally. It was about 100 Philippine pesos. Considering the state of marriages generally, this is probably a good idea! At least the city means well. We will report back after/if we graduate.

Now is the part to which I really object. The staff at city hall works from a little chit, which may as well be holy writ as it is slavishly followed, national laws and procedures elsewhere notwithstanding. Be prepared to present your passport; your original birth certificate and original death/divorce certificate all over again - oh yes AND the Certificate of Capacity is required as well! Of course they want a copy, which you will make & pay for!

You pay your fee (118 Philippine pesos) and fill in an even longer form. I couldn't even remember what the amount of the fee was, until Anne arrived just now to audit my writing - having been banished from the office at the time of the crime by my dear one.

We took a break for lunch and Anne wisely suggested a pizza for the office staff to grease the skids and restore the tranquility I had destroyed during the morning's "fun". This was, undoubtedly, a good idea. There was another form of propina presented, to which I was not party and thus I am unable to describe.

If necessary, I will post again to give Anne an opportunity for rebuttal. Three weeks to go. I hope I make it!
