⌛ New Kid on the Block

Hi all, with regards to the thread title, I am new to this forum. As for the word 'kid', at 50+ I'm a bit old for that word, and I also have to admit that I'm not 'on the block' yet, as I'm still living in the UK - oh, and I'm not American, either. I chose my user name because I often hear the word muttered as I go by - just as, when my honey ko is in Thailand, they assume she is Thai.

My girlfriend is a local girl whom I am able to visit for extended periods due to the flexibility of my job (freelance writer), and I am hoping to live there full time in the near future if I can arrange to do more of my work online.

I have to admit to having mixed feelings about Dumaguete. Just now, after an extended period back in Blighty, it seems like paradise. Anyone familiar with the UK will know that we've got a control freak government that prefers to criminalise the hard-working middle classes through thousands of petty regulations, yet is unable to tackle real crime, prices for everything are sky high (and due to the credit crunch, getting higher), and taxation is ferocious - it's a truly crazy place! By comparison, the Phils is a haven of freedom.

On the other hand, it only takes a week or so in the PI until I am driven mad by the thousand crazy things I see commented on in this forum, and the UK doesn't look so bad. In the UK the cold weather gets me down. In the Phils, the searing heat gets me down even more. Maybe the best solution is to keep shuttling between the two places - but now that the cost of flights has gone through the roof that's not an option.

I sometimes joke to my honey ko that there are two things about the Phils that never fail to delight me: the low prices, and the mango shakes (I would like to add a third - the beautiful women, but she's likely to take exception to that).

Finally, when I do get settled there I'll be looking to get stuck into my number one hobby, music. Anybody out there need a bass player?

At fifty its best to have the funds or a pension before you even make plans to move. if your thinking of starting a business and living on a small amount of savings, your taking a chance wher many angels fear to tread.

Negros is one of the better Islands, but we have cockrels that dont obey the rules, dogs and noise, however one can find a haven like mine that is more than acceptable to live in. one can enjoy life in a paradise that has hell next door. There are many Brits here and I am one of them most of us are ugly so you dont have to worry about your honey, lol

Duma is great if you want to make friends the bars and eating places like anywhere else vary in service and quality but the quality out shine the bad quality.

Your money will go much further and your life will change, it could be for the better or for the worst but eigther way you will enjoy, lol

I am a citizen journalist I have done journalistic work in my deep past, I can say not a lot happens here thats news worthy, but I find lots to write about putting the world to right. I use to write about the Y2K problems so you can see how acient I am.

AS for living in the Philippines my only reservations are Health Care but if you are fit and well and only 50yrs old, go for it man. Nothing is going to change in the UK for a long long time.....best wishes john
